The treasure chests in Torghast, the endgame feature of WoW: Shadowlands, are tricky. We show you how to open them.
The Tower Torghast is one of the major features of World of Warcraft Shadowlands. Here, all characters can go a little crazy and enhance themselves with absurdly powerful Anima powers to plow through the Jailer’s servants. However, Torghast isn’t always straightforward. Aside from challenging boss fights, there are also a few small puzzles to solve.
Especially the various chests repeatedly pose problems for players that are otherwise less related to such puzzles. It’s frustrating, as every chest holds a new Anima power for the entire group that could decide between victory and defeat against the final boss.
There are three different types of chests in the tower:
- Chests with keys
- Chests with levers
- Chests with colored runes
We reveal how to open all three types of chests.
How to open chests with keys: If you discover a chest and see neither levers nor colored runes in front of it, it is a key chest. This chest is secured by three locks. You can find the keys scattered throughout the level. The blue keys are rather small and easy to overlook, but they will be shown on the minimap when you are nearby. Each time you find a key, you receive a message that a lock on the level has opened.
Once you have all 3 keys, return to the chest and claim your Anima power.
How to open chests with levers: Other chests have four large levers in front of them. Here, you simply have to figure out by trial and error which combination opens the lock. But don’t worry – there aren’t too many combinations. Since each lever can only have 2 states, with 4 levers, there are a total of 16 possible combinations. Just go through all combinations one by one to be sure. A 1 means the lever is up, a 0 means the lever is down.

- 1010
- 1001
- 0101
- 0011
- 0110
- 1110
- 1101
- 0111
- 1011
- 1111
These are all the combinations, one of them must be correct.
How to open chests with colored runes: These chests are the most complicated for many players. All 4 runes must have a specific, randomly selected color in order to open their respective lock. However, it doesn’t help to simply click all combinations like with the locks, as most runes not only change their own color when clicked but also the color of other runes!
Yet there is a simple trick to quickly decipher the lock.
Click the runes in order and observe how many runes change with each click:
- There is one rune that changes the color of all 4 runes.
- There is one rune that changes the color of 3 runes.
- There is one rune that changes the color of 2 runes.
- There is one rune that only changes its own color.
Remember which rune changes how many colors and proceed as follows:
- Click the rune that changes all 4 runes. Once the lock behind this rune disappears, leave it alone.
- Click the rune that changes 3 runes. Once the lock behind this rune disappears, leave it alone.
- Click the rune that changes 2 runes. Also leave it alone once the lock directly behind it disappears.
- Click the last rune that only changes itself until the last lock is opened.
If you proceed with the chests in the manner described above, you should be able to open them within a few seconds and earn an additional Anima power!
