A spooky bug is currently plaguing World of Warcraft. Statues seem to have come to life, causing quite a few moments of fright.
A new patch always brings a few small, hidden errors in World of Warcraft. Currently, a bug like this is quite creepy, as it suddenly turns dead statues into living creatures responsible for some eerie chills.
What kind of error is this? In the WoW subreddit, user Caradin posted a short video of the statue from Arom’s Stand. This is a stronghold of the Alliance in Drustvar. An important place here is a statue in the south of Arom’s Stand. It should actually be made of stone and thus immovable. However, when the character approaches the statue, both the statue and the hawk on the man’s arm turn to face the player. You can see that here:

Where does the bug come from? With the Pre-Patch 9.0, Blizzard implemented a new system for NPCs. Whenever the player’s character walks close to an NPC or the NPC walks past the character, they try to look at the player.
This is basically a good thing and makes the world feel more authentic. NPCs notice the character, give them a quick glance, and then continue with their daily routine.
Apparently, this feature was also applied to statues. This is likely because the newer statues are essentially just NPCs with fixed poses that have been colored accordingly. When the new system was introduced, it seems to have been applied to all NPCs. That’s why even the statues now turn their heads to face the players.
This can be seen with many human statues, but also with some Quillen in the Mogu areas (the “dogs” of the Mogu).
Will this be fixed? It will likely take a while for Blizzard to fix this bug, as all statues might have to be individually removed from the new system. Until then, it’s enough to shock some puzzled friends and come up with spooky stories about what the strange statues in the game world are up to.
With a bit of luck, this will be a thing of the past with the next patch, which is expected to arrive with the launch of Shadowlands.
