The story chief of World of Warcraft has quietly left. Steve Danuser is no longer with Blizzard – and he hasn’t been since last year.
Everyone must have noticed by now that several key figures at Blizzard Entertainment have left in recent years, who also worked on World of Warcraft. However, there is now one more departure to add to the already known exits – Steve Danuser is also no longer on the team and apparently hasn’t been since November 2023.
Who is Steve Danuser? Steve Danuser was the lead narrative director of World of Warcraft in recent years. He was significantly responsible for the story conveyed in the latest expansions. While he was largely responsible for the overall story of the entire game, he also worked on individual quest lines and directly wrote text for World of Warcraft.
Why did Steve Danuser leave? In an interview with PCGamer, Danuser talks about his departure and makes it clear that one of the main reasons was likely that Blizzard enforced the “Return to Office” principle. During the pandemic, many employees had the opportunity to work from home for most of the time.
According to his LinkedIn profile, he now lives near Minneapolis-St. Paul – quite a distance from Irvine, where the Blizzard campus is located.
Being able to continue working from home was a factor, as I firmly believe in the efficient online collaboration of a team.
What has Steve Danuser worked on? Although Danuser has worked on most story developments in recent years, some things were also directly written by him. His recent contributions included:
- The Hunter Class Hall quest line
- Some quests of the Allied Races
- The whispers and prophecies of Il’gynoth and N’Zoth
- Numerous in-game books, such as the ones on the Forbidden Island and in the Emerald Dream
- Many dialogues from the “Stay a while and listen” conversations in the game
He seems to have been very satisfied with his work on Dragonflight. He stated:
I am particularly proud of my work on Dragonflight, from creating the original idea of the story of the expansion, through the cultures and the history, to planning the narrative points throughout the patches, alongside fantastic creative partners.
Community has mixed feelings
Steve Danuser’s departure had been suspected by some in the WoW community, as the change to his LinkedIn profile had already been noticed a few weeks ago. Danuser was perceived as a controversial figure within the community. While some appreciated his work, there were many who were not happy with him.
One of the biggest points of criticism is the story of Sylvanas Windrunner throughout the last expansions. This story, along with the associated storyline of Nathanos Blightcaller, largely comes from Danuser. To this day, fans often express that he “ruined” Sylvanas or that Danuser wrote himself into the story in the form of Nathanos.
Another theory in the community is that there was a dispute over these unpopular stories from recent years with WoW guru Chris Metzen, who no longer wanted Danuser on the team. However, this is merely speculation and there is no evidence for it.
Overall, the mood seems to be mixed. Some believe that he is “finally gone” – others found his contribution to Warcraft quite important and valuable.
What Danuser will do in the future is not yet known.
