In World of Warcraft, everyone makes beginner mistakes at some point. However, some are definitely more laughable than others. Here are some of the funniest stories.
For many players, World of Warcraft was the entry point into the world of MMORPGs. Back then, over 15 years ago, information was not as readily available, and the nuances of the game were mostly found in various guild forums. Generally, many players did not research a game in advance as thoroughly. This led to making many beginner mistakes or holding false assumptions that resulted in foolish behavior.
In the World of Warcraft subreddit, players shared their funniest stories from the early days of WoW. We want to briefly present some of them here.
KingFirmin504 has a story that some may relate to:
Back in Vanilla (I was 13) on my first day in WoW, I ran with my level 10 warrior to Thunder Bluff and read in trade chat that you could use Alt+F4 to make your character set up a tent and a campfire. Of course, I tried it, and my game closed. My 13-year-old self thought it was my bad computer, so I logged back in and tried again before realizing I was being pranked.
When I logged in for the third time, I saw people in the chat writing: “Don’t lie to the noobs, everyone knows you do that with /camp.” When that logged me out too, I was so angry that I put the game aside for a week.
Splatooningfork has a rather curious story:
Whenever I wanted something from someone advertising in the trade channel, I would message that person. They would always ask if I had “the mats”.
Then I went to the auction house and searched for “mats”, but I could never find a result. I always thought “mats” were just sold out very quickly.
We have even more such stories for you here.
DitsyDude has a story that especially fans of the undead might relate to:
It wasn’t that long ago, but when I started playing Horde, I spent about half an hour figuring out how to get into Undercity. But every time I approached the elevators, the gate would close, so I ran to the other elevator, which also closed again.
Only when I got really annoyed and said to myself “screw this”, did the gate open again, and I felt like a huge idiot.
However, the highlight is the story from Navaro27, who tells:
I played a Night Elf rogue in Vanilla. You unlock stealth at a later level, but I didn’t know that. I thought Shadowmimic, the racial ability of the Night Elves, was the rogues’ stealth.
I couldn’t believe how dumb that concept was, that I would go stealth but not be able to move or it would break. I then figured out that this class had to “wait for the right moment” like a spider and waited for passing enemies.
In the end, I deleted the character and made another because it seemed too silly to me.
Cortyn says: I could surely contribute some of these anecdotes, like the fact that I thought “Polymorph” in Vanilla WoW was a completely ridiculous spell until level 60. Because what is the point of turning an enemy into a sheep when they heal back up so quickly? It only made sense to me after a kind tank explained it to me in Scholomance.
Do you also have such “noob stories”? Or were you immediately the skill god before the Lord, who made no such mistakes?
