For the newest race in World of Warcraft, much is likely to change soon. At least that’s what Game Director Ion Hazzikostas suggests.
The Dracthyr are indeed a special folk in World of Warcraft Dragonflight. They are the only species that can become “casters”, and at the same time, that is the only class that a Dracthyr can choose. Every Dracthyr is a caster, and every caster is a Dracthyr.
However, this could change. For Game Director hints that Dracthyr will likely be able to choose other classes in the future.
Where does the information come from? In a group interview with wowhead and several WoW content creators, many questions were posed to Game Director Ion Hazzikostas. Although it mainly revolved around the upcoming Patch 10.0.7, other questions were asked as well. Wowhead has published a summary of the interview, which also touched on whether Dracthyr would only ever remain casters. In response, Hazzikostas said:
There is a high chance that Dracthyr will eventually be able to wield weapons and cast frostbolts.
Even though “frostbolts” clearly allude to mages, Hazzikostas likely meant to express that Dracthyr will be able to choose significantly more classes in the future. In the past, “a high chance” has almost always meant at Blizzard that the feature is already in planning.
On the other hand, this seems rather unlikely. The talent tree of casters is closely intertwined with the Dracthyr – and due to the dragon abilities, that would make little sense for other races.
What else was said? Hazzikostas also mentioned in the interview that they want to make more class-race combos accessible and add them over time. They aim to create as much diversity as possible while ensuring that the story also provides a logical reason why a specific race can now choose a corresponding class.
That makes sense, after all, many races have a long history and corresponding development. For instance, warlocks would likely be difficult to justify for “Lightforged Draenei”. Such restrictions also exist for some other races that would first need a story reason.
When will this come? When Dracthyr can choose other classes is still unclear. So far, there is no indication that this could be the case in Patch 10.1 Ashes of Neltharion – hence, the earliest possible date for that would be Patch 10.1.5, which is only set to arrive later in the summer. However, Hazzikostas may also have meant that new classes for Dracthyr will only be playable in the next expansion or even later.
However, it seems clear that this is coming – and at some point, significantly more Dracthyr will glide through Azeroth.
