Patch 8.1 Tides of Vengeance (“Waves of Vengeance”) has been in development for many months. The new update for World of Warcraft is already almost finished, as the patch will be officially released in just a few days. The almost complete state of the work is also evident in the fact that the patch can be downloaded already. This eliminates a long wait on patch day.
How big is patch 8.1? The upcoming update for Battle for Azeroth is quite large, even by WoW standards. With 16.5 GB of new data, the patch consumes a lot of hard drive space and can take several hours to download on slow internet connections. If you want to hit the ground running on patch day, December 12, you should download the patch now.
How do you start the background download? To download the patch early, you need to follow these steps.
- Start the Battle.net software.
- Select the entry “World of Warcraft” and click on the gear for “Options” and choose “Game Settings”.
- Now select the sub-menu “Installation & Updates” and scroll down to the entry “Game Updates”.
- For the sub-point “Automatic Updates”, select the item “Install latest updates and download data for future updates”.
- Scroll further down and enter “0 KB/s” in both fields under “Network Bandwidth” to set the download speed to “unlimited”.
- Then confirm with “Done”.
Now the Battle.net launcher should start downloading patch 8.1.
More data may be needed on patch day: Regardless of this download, it may still be necessary to pull a small update on patch day to receive the last changes. However, this should normally be limited to a few hundred MB.
