Unfortunately, the change to the transmog in WoW: Dragonflight was just a bug. But Blizzard hears the demand – and turns it into a feature.
A few days ago, we reported that there will be a pretty cool change to the transmog system in World of Warcraft. In Dragonflight, some sets can be collected much more easily. This caused enthusiasm among fans. However, it has now come to light: Oops, that was just a bug. But since it was well received, Blizzard is bringing the bug back in a modified form as a feature.
What bug are we talking about? In the beta of Dragonflight, some players noticed that certain factions sell entire sets of transmog gear. These so-called “ensembles” are items that you purchase and using them unlocks the entire set.
The special thing was: You could also unlock sets for armor types that you actually cannot wear. For instance, a mage could unlock the ensembles for leather or plate and add them to their collection. The mage could not use the transmog themselves (since they can only transmog cloth), but they could at least unlock them for other characters on the account.
What is Blizzard going to do with it now? Blizzard must have felt a bit pressured when the topic came up and was received so well. Because it was immediately seen as a “great feature” – even though it was probably just a bug. No one should be able to unlock transmogs of other armor types. However, Blizzard realizes that the bug was quite well received by the beta testers and explains further in the official WoW forum:
We recognize that players do not want to regrind the ability to unlock ensembles multiple times. But we also do not want to create the problem where a player accidentally buys the ensemble for the wrong armor type, uses it, and then finds out that they cannot use the armor they just unlocked. Therefore, in Dragonflight, the ability to unlock cosmetic glory rewards will be account-wide, so you can unlock the ensembles with an alternate character that uses the appropriate armor type.
In short: You will only need to farm reputation with a new faction once, and then you can unlock the ensembles with other characters.
This is how the community reacts: Basically quite positively. Since the original bug functionality is essentially being maintained, most are satisfied. The only concern is that the ensembles may be unlocked with a currency that would have to be farmed painstakingly on the alternate character. A few voices from the comments at wowhead:
- “We were happy about a bug, Blizzard fixes the bug and still finds something to satisfy what we hoped we would get? Fantastic.”
- “Hopefully they do this retroactively for other factions.”
- “As long as the required currency for purchasing is gold, that’s a good change.”
