Data miners have discovered something great in World of Warcraft. The Mage Tower from Legion is likely to make its return.
Although World of Warcraft often faces criticism for its many systems, there are certain contents that players mourn for a long time when they disappear from the game. One such content was the Mage Tower, which players could visit in Legion on the Broken Shore. Now anticipation is building for the return – as initial data mining shows that the old Mage Tower is being revived.
What is the Mage Tower? The Mage Tower was an endgame content for all players in the later patches of the “Legion” expansion. In a particularly tricky boss fight that required a lot of planning and practice, each class could earn a series of special skins for the artifact weapon. It was time-limited – those who unlocked the skin back then still have it today. Other players can no longer obtain it.
What has been discovered now? In the game data of Patch 9.1.5, information has been found that the Mage Tower is being revived. There are entries that overhaul some teleportations associated with the Mage Tower, such as:
- “Teleport – Imp Mother’s Den”
- “Teleport – Twisting Nether”
- “Teleport – God Queen Scenario”
These are all the designations for the locations where the class challenges of the Mage Tower took place.
But that’s not all. Numerous spells from the era of the Mage Tower have been found in the game data, and they have received an update. The damage of these abilities has been adjusted to better match the current health values of characters – after all, back in Legion, players were level 110, and now due to the level squish, they are at level 60.
What rewards will there be? It is rather unlikely that the artifact weapon skins will become accessible again. However, other cosmetic items have already been found in the game data – such as a recolor of the popular T20 set that was available back in the Tomb of Sargeras.
Here, the lead game designer Jeremy Feasel (“Muffinus”) made a mysterious tweet. It shows a Mage set from the data mining with the cat Garfield and the question: “Huh. I wonder what this is for.”
It seems like these transmog sets are a reward for the Mage Tower.
When can this be played? Only after the release of Patch 9.1.5 – which is expected to arrive sometime in mid-October. However, it is quite possible that the return of the Mage Tower will be tied to the “Timewalking: Legion” event, which will also be released with Patch 9.1.5. A cool addition to Timewalking that will also provide content for solo players. After all, in the Mage Tower, everyone is on their own.
How are players reacting: Quite excited. Whether in the WoW Subreddit or the comments on Wowhead, the anticipation is quite high. A few opinions on this are:
- “Don’t do this to me, Blizzard. My heart can’t take it.”
- “WHAT THE HELL, I WILL NO-LIFE THIS THING SO HARD!”
- “Damn, this is exactly the one thing they could do to get me back into a subscription…”
However, there are also a few voices expressing concern that Blizzard will make the artifact weapon skins from back then accessible again. Haytur writes:
I will cancel my subscription if this is a way to get the transmog from the tower. One reason I still play is that I have things I can show off because I invested time in the game. They will take that feeling away from me and then it will be time to leave the game behind.
Why is the Mage Tower so popular? Ever since the end of Legion, players have mourned the Mage Tower. For many, it was a particularly cool challenge where one could tackle a really tough task alone and gradually improve. Garnished with a cool, exclusive – and above all purely cosmetic – reward, it struck a chord with many players.
However, note that this is still just data mining and some hints from a developer. Until there is an official confirmation, it is still possible that this feature might not make it into the chat. A little bit of anticipation seems to be quite justified due to all the data, however.
What do you think about the (likely) return of the Mage Tower? Are you looking forward to it? Or do you have no interest in “reheated content”?
