Many players are concerned about Sylvanas’ fate in World of Warcraft. But the developers have great plans for her.
Hardly any fate in World of Warcraft is discussed as intensely as that of Sylvanas Windrunner. For one side of the player base, she is increasingly becoming the “stereotypical villain”, while another part celebrates Sylvanas for finally pushing through her plans. However, as the quests progress and her plans are revealed, concerns are also surfacing.
Will Sylvanas end up as just another Garrosh and become a raid boss?
Sylvanas as a raid boss? In an interview with Eurogamer, Alex Afrasiabi, who wrote a large part of Sylvanas’ storyline, mentioned that she “will not simply go down as a raid boss”. That would be “disparaging” and would not do justice to a character like Sylvanas.

Divided fans were the goal: The developers aimed, according to Afrasiabi, to split the Horde players into “Pro Sylvanas” and “Anti Sylvanas” camps.
“Every time we divide the player base in their support for a character, it feels like we are doing our job. Every time it is one-sided, and it becomes clear ‘this is the right direction’, it is no longer as interesting.”
Is Sylvanas true to her character? It is often discussed that Sylvanas has “changed” or is “straying from her line and becoming insane”. Here too, Afrasiabi counters and explains:
“I have personally been writing Sylvanas since 2006, and this is all quite exactly her character – The Wrath Gate, the Plague, the Forsaken. All of that was under Sylvanas’ command. What we are seeing now is the escalation of Sylvanas’ plans, and we are, obviously, in the middle of it.”
This escalation is leading more and more Horde players to no longer identify with Sylvanas. For this reason, they also receive a choice in Patch 8.1 Tides of Vengeance. They can remain loyal to Sylvanas or stand against her.
What exactly the developers are planning for Sylvanas is still uncertain. However, a screenshot causing a stir showed her with the dagger Xal’atath.
