BlizzCon 2019 revealed new information about Sylvanas’ plans in World of Warcraft. She has apparently been planning for a very, very long time.
At BlizzCon 2019, the recent “Q&A” panel for World of Warcraft took place. Some fans had the opportunity to ask their questions and learn more about the systems or lore of World of Warcraft. One question revealed particularly exciting information, as it provided more details on Sylvanas’ plans in Shadowlands. Apparently, she had always planned to become Warchief and was actively supported in this.
What was said? There were some questions about Sylvanas, one of which even traced back to Legion. One questioner wanted to know why Sylvanas collaborated with Varian Wrynn in the cinematic from “Legion”. At that time, she helped him fight against a hellish beast and other demons, even though Varian could have died in the process.
The developers’ response was that Sylvanas wanted to have a good reputation with her allies back then. She needed the support and goodwill of the other races so that her plans could develop. She wanted to ensure that she would be in a good position to become Warchief.

Was Vol’jin deceived by the Jailer?
What about Vol’jin? This information also sheds new light on Vol’jin, who appointed Sylvanas as Warchief, which the other leaders of the Horde accepted. So far, it has never been clarified who exactly whispered this to Vol’jin. Vol’jin himself thought it was the spirits. Even though the developers do not provide a definitive answer, it now seems plausible that it was the “Jailer” who did so. He is allied with Sylvanas and lends her his power.
Who is the Jailer? The Jailer is one of the rulers of a realm in the Shadowlands. He rules over “the Maw”, where only the most evil souls are banished, whom can never be redeemed. However, for several years, all souls have been sent directly into the Maw. This includes all victims from the Fourth War – all the dead from Teldrassil and the war campaign.
All those souls and their Anima have led to the Maw growing and the Jailer gaining more power. He has passed on some of his power to Sylvanas, which is how she received her new abilities.
When did Sylvanas and the Jailer come into contact? Another question was answered regarding the meeting between the Jailer and Sylvanas. This took place many years ago, after Arthas was defeated as the Lich King. When Sylvanas jumped from Icecrown to die and encountered her Val’kyr, she also made contact with the Jailer for the first time.
We will probably only learn more detailed information about this when we can actually play Shadowlands. But it remains exciting.
