Many players are plagued by severe stuttering and lag in the latest WoW patch. However, there are several solutions to the problems.
The patch 10.1 Embers of Neltharion has been live for a few days, and some players are complaining about major issues in World of Warcraft. This is not about gameplay bugs but about performance drops. The frame rate drops significantly, causing Blizzard’s MMORPG to feel like it is stuttering or lagging – even on modern computers.
How do the performance drops manifest? Many report that before the patch, they could achieve stable frame rates between 60 fps and 100 fps in World of Warcraft, but since the patch, this value has often halved. In especially crowded areas, such as the capital Valdrakken, the frame rate sometimes even drops into single digits – and this happens on relatively modern computers.
Blizzard is aware of this issue and is working on a fix. However, there are three methods that you can use to resolve the problem yourself.
Method 1: Deleting a line of code
A workaround comes directly from Blizzard, which is said to have provided relief for many players.
- Close World of Warcraft.
- Then open your WoW folder and navigate to _retail_ → WTF.
- Open the “Config.wtf” with Notepad or another text editor.
- Search for the line “SET SkyCloudL0D” and delete it completely.
- Save the file and then start WoW via the Battle.net launcher.
Method 2: Change Windows setting
In the WoW subreddit, some players explained that there might also be another source of the error occurring under Windows 11. Windows 11 attempts to apply a new “optimization” to the game, which, however, does not work correctly. Disable this – or at least check whether it is enabled for you.
You can find the setting in Windows 11 under: Start → System → Display → Graphics settings → Adjusting default graphics settings
There you will find an option for optimizing games in windowed mode. Disable it.
Method 3: Disable all addons
Even though this is the “standard tip” after every patch, it should not be overlooked. Especially patch 10.1 has changed a lot in the interface so that even small addons can lead to significant problems. Many reported that addons like “MapCoords”, “WIM” or “All The Things” have made the game unplayable.
Make sure all addons are updated to the latest version and start the game without activated addons as a test. If it runs smoothly, you can activate the addons one by one until you find the one causing issues.
