The Twitch streamer Asmongold exploited a glitch in WoW, but only enjoyed it for a short time. Blizzard took strict action and changed how loot is distributed in World of Warcraft.
The streamer Asmongold is one of the veterans of World of Warcraft, and of course, he was also there for the launch of Dragonflight.
Although Asmongold tries to enjoy the game, he has a tendency to exploit glitches or unintended game mechanics whenever the opportunity arises. This was also the case at the launch of Dragonflight – but Blizzard reacts quickly. Even during the live stream, the exploit is addressed.
Exploit used to farm items with 40 people
What was the exploit? Very early at level 70, many players tried to get good gear. The options for this are limited, as many of the good “farmable” contents, such as Mythic+, only become available in the coming weeks. An acceptable source for loot are therefore rare enemies that can be found all over the game world.
The special thing about these “rare mobs” in Dragonflight is that they can also drop loot that one cannot use. For example, a mage can get two-handed swords or a warrior can receive cloth robes.
The interesting part is that there were no restrictions on trading this loot. If the warrior did not want his cloth robe, he could give it to a mage or priest who was also present when the mob was killed.
The “trick” was that Asmongold filled a whole raid with people who did not need his gear. When 40 players hit a rare enemy that can drop a two-handed sword, but only Asmongold is able to make proper use of that sword, he has nearly 40 teammates who have a chance at the sword and can then trade it to him.
With this exploit, it was possible to specifically farm gear and practically guarantee its acquisition.
Blizzard responds live, fixes the loot error immediately
Asmongold did not have long to enjoy this exploit, as he clearly attracted the attention of Blizzard. Suddenly, the problem was fixed and there was no loot for the streamer’s group anymore.
This was followed by quite an amusing reaction, where Asmongold and the whole raid flee the scene as if they were escaping from a crime scene – the group disperses in all directions.
Whether there will be penalties from Blizzard for exploiting this exploit is still unknown. However, since it is “only” relatively low-level loot that will probably be practically worthless next week anyway, it is quite possible that they will overlook this. Generally, however, Blizzard maintains a rather strict policy of account penalties when exploits are intentionally and on a large scale exploited.
How would you approach this? Do you find Asmongold’s farming method valid because it was possible in the game? Or should one be banned for that?
