Asmongold has ventured into the latest WoW raid – but it was too difficult for him. He prefers to play Elden Ring instead, which seems to be more enjoyable.
In World of Warcraft, the first part of the raid “Mausoleum of the First” has been available for a few days. Many players are flocking into the raid on normal and heroic difficulty, which rewards a controversial cinematic at the end. However, some groups are struggling to get far – as the raid is exceptionally tough.
A similar fate befalls the streamer Asmongold. The raid apparently proved to be too challenging and not relevant enough for him, so he preferred to play Elden Ring.
Who is Asmongold? Asmongold was for a long time the biggest WoW streamer overall, but also always a great critic of the game. In recent months, he has dedicated himself to many other games, including Final Fantasy XIV, Lost Ark or even Elden Ring.
What happened? Coinciding with the launch of the raid “Mausoleum of the First”, Asmongold ventured into the raid on normal difficulty. However, the raid evening was rather bumpy. After several desperate attempts at the boss Halondrus, Asmongold’s motivation hit a low point. Like his chat, he preferred to play Elden Ring instead of continuing with World of Warcraft.
He explained:
If you want to hear the honest truth: I hate raiding. I really hate raiding. I hate having to rely on other people, and I hate that these people have to rely on me. I like to play for myself or in a small group. I hate it when a ‘Longshot’ [random player name in his group] dies, and […] then it’s just over. Okay, great. I didn’t do anything wrong, but I still have to do it again. And then you run all the way back to the boss, and everyone has to buff again.
[…] It has always been like this, and it didn’t bother me before. I just lose my patience for it immediately.
Asmongold then ended the WoW session for the evening and instead played Elden Ring, a game he apparently enjoys more at the moment.
The next day, Asmongold clarified in another video that he is not satisfied with the difficulty of the raid either.
I believe that WoW raids have simply become too difficult for the average player, it’s just too much.
[…] Again, I can do this, that’s fine. I’ve done all the Mythic fights up to Battle for Azeroth. Really, it’s not that I can’t do this stuff; it’s more that I don’t want to.
With that, Asmongold refers to the fact that he primarily does not want to invest the time that high-difficulty raids require. Because in World of Warcraft, most bosses require a lot of practice until tactics are internalized and refined, and every member of the group can play the fights flawlessly – in addition to the necessary performance, be it for DPS or healing.
However, another problem for Asmongold is the lack of motivation. Gear no longer entices him since he knows that he will soon lose it again:
I believe that’s really another problem with the game; it doesn’t interest me at all whether I get new gear because I know it will just be replaced by something I find in the open world in the next patch.
Will the raid remain this hard? Blizzard has already made some nerfs in the past few days, and more are sure to follow. However, there is also the certainty that all characters will become even stronger in the upcoming weeks. There will be new tier sets with strong bonuses, and soon everyone can wear two legendary items simultaneously. That should significantly improve the performance of all characters, whether DPS, healer, or tank, and make currently seemingly insurmountable obstacles manageable.
Have you mastered the raid yet? Or do you see it like Asmongold, having no desire right now, or find the mausoleum too difficult?
