The players of World of Warcraft are begging for a mobile game. Did Blizzard simply bet on the wrong horse?
The big disappointment of BlizzCon 2018 was the announcement of the mobile game Diablo Immortal. But while Reddit is still upset about the botched announcement, it echoes from the World of Warcraft subreddit: “Hey, Blizzard. We would like a mobile game!”
What happened? In the WoW subreddit, the user Voltan_Ignatio wrote a post with the simple title: “Dear Blizzard, if you want to make a new mobile game: I bet a game for pet battles would have received a better reaction than Diablo Immortal.”
Apparently, other users of the subreddit saw it the same way and rated the post so well that it reached the top for hours. With more than 27,000 upvotes, it is one of the highest-rated posts of all time in the WoW subreddit.
What do fans want? Players want a mobile game that essentially works just like the pet battle system in World of Warcraft and is also connected to the main game. This way, players could level their pets on their smartphones, complete pet battle world quests, or compete against other players.
Many players state that they would “finally start to care about pet battles,” as they otherwise wouldn’t get around to it.
Most naturally think of the early Pokémon games (after all, the pet battle system of WoW is also based on that). They also already have their own ideas for different “editions” in reference to Pokémon red, blue, and yellow:
- Warcraft Blood Red
- Warcraft Azure Blue
- Warcraft Fel Green
The number of upvotes for a pet battle system on mobile devices is still growing. At least here, players would appreciate a mobile game that expands their experience in World of Warcraft.
Whether Blizzard will ever fulfill this wish of the players remains to be seen.
