WoW: Shadowlands breaks all records at Blizzard – and beyond. It is the fastest-selling PC game of all time.
For about two weeks, World of Warcraft Shadowlands has been live and countless players are roaming in the Shadowlands. If some WoW players doubted the success of the expansion, the launch is certainly the most successful Blizzard has ever reported.
3.7 million buyers in 24 hours
What was said? In a press release, Blizzard announced how well World of Warcraft Shadowlands has sold within the first 24 hours. The result is impressive, as World of Warcraft Shadowlands was purchased more than 3.7 million times – and that was just within the first 24 hours. This includes pre-orders, as Shadowlands could be pre-ordered months before the official release to gain some bonuses and advantages in the game.
Thus, World of Warcraft is the “Fastest-Selling PC Game of All Time” – the PC game that has sold the fastest.
Blizzard was able to surpass its own records. Diablo III moves to second place (3.5 million on day 1) and WoW: Legion to third place (3.3 million on day 1).
COVID-19 contributes its part: Of course, one must not forget that currently, due to the still ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, more people are turning to entertainment in the form of video games. But even with this knowledge, the sale of 3.7 million copies on day 1 is a huge success.
Will the success continue? Whether World of Warcraft Shadowlands can retain players and continue to build on its success in the coming months remains to be seen. Starting tomorrow, the first season of Shadowlands begins and then the endgame content must impress. The covenants and Torghast alone promise content for many weeks, reaching well into the year 2021.
Whether new content arrives quickly enough and whether players stay motivated for a long time will be seen. After all, there should be more information at BlizzConline 2021.
