Many in the Horde from World of Warcraft remain loyal to Sylvanas. But why is that? Blizzard provides an answer.
In World of Warcraft, players of the Horde are divided into two camps. One side is just waiting for Sylvanas to be overthrown and brought to her end. The other side remains loyal to the Warchief and hopes the story will change in their favor.
This is the current problem: Many players no longer feel comfortable in the Horde. They do not want to belong to a faction led by a crazed undead who only has war and death in mind and disregards old values such as “honor” in the Horde. For these players, it is incomprehensible why Sylvanas still has such strong support in the Horde and can continue to act freely without a political upheaval taking place.
This is what Blizzard says about the loyalty of the Horde: That many characters (especially the nameless troops) still follow Sylvanas is a thorn in the side of many players. However, Blizzard has responded to this. Lead Encounter Designer Morgan Day from Blizzard said in an interview with mmorpg.com:
“Imagine if you were in the position of a member of the Horde. They have known nothing but conflict for over 20 years. They believe that Sylvanas is the one who will end it. She is the one who unites the Horde in ways that have never been done before. It is easy to understand why people want that.
They might think: “I would like to experience peace, please. Sylvanas will bring us that.”
People know where Baine, Saurfang, and Thrall have led – it is simply the same conflict they are already familiar with. Sylvanas is doing something that no one has done before. It’s interesting to experience different sides of that. She has a plan.”
There is still much story left for Sylvanas: However, no one should expect a swift end for Sylvanas. In the same interview, Shani Edwards, one of the Senior Game Producers, stated:
“I would tell fans of Sylvanas that her story is definitely not over yet. She is not Garrosh 2.0. She has much more in store. I don’t want to reveal anything yet, but there is much more to Sylvanas’ story to come.”
So, if we are to believe the statements, Sylvanas will have a longer future and still has strong support in the Horde. This is mainly because Sylvanas is trying something “new.” While that is not necessarily “good” by moral standards, “good” has only led to more war over the past 20 years.
And as any good anime and “Final Fantasy” villain knows: If there is no one left to wage war, then that is also a form of peace.
