The questing in World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King Classic is becoming harder. Because a quest feature will not come.
Update 29.06.2022, 10:30 AM: In the meantime, Blizzard has commented on this. The information from the interview seems outdated, and the quest tracking tool will probably be implemented in WoW WotLK Classic after all. Thanks to mibbio and Huehuehue for the tip.
Original message: Quests in World of Warcraft are not exactly hard – at least not in today’s time. Markers on the map indicate exactly where to go to complete quests. But that was not always the case and only came with Wrath of the Lich King. However, this will not happen a second time, as WotLK Classic will forgo this feature.
Where does the info come from? Originally, the information comes from an interview at the end of April with the magazine GameRant, but it only gained real attention now. In the interview, Blizzard discussed some changes that were indeed implemented in Wrath of the Lich King – whether at launch or in a later patch – but will not be reintroduced in the Classic version of WotLK. One of these features is the quest helper.
What is this feature? The “Quest Helper” functionality has become standard in modern World of Warcraft and almost all other major MMORPGs. When you accept a quest, the quest objective is marked directly on the map. In the case of World of Warcraft, there is a bluish target area that shows exactly where the monsters to hunt or the items to collect are located. This is now standard in MMOs and is found in almost every larger game. It was not always like that; before, you had to read quest texts to find out the location – or despair and consult the internet.
The feature was originally introduced with Patch 3.3.0, so quite late in the lifecycle of Wrath of the Lich King.
Some hope for a real series of World of Warcraft – inspired by this advertisement:
Does it make that big of a difference? Probably not. Addons that help with quests are already very popular in Classic. Especially the addon “Questie” has already been used by many players in WoW Classic and Burning Crusade Classic and is actively being developed. The addon comprehensively shows where there are still open quests, to which locations players need to travel for quest completion, and even particularly efficient routes can be determined with the right settings.
Nevertheless, this change primarily means more freedom. Because now players basically have a choice whether they want to use such a quest helper or not. Even if a large part of the players will use addons like “Questie”, a small portion of players who want a more puristic experience in the open world can choose to forgo it.
What do you think about it? A good thing? Or is Blizzard distancing itself further from Wrath of the Lich King – and is that bad?
