The famous “Silver Dragon” for rare spawns in World of Warcraft is disappearing. And the community is up in arms. They want to keep the marking on the health bar of rare mobs.
If there is one thing that long-time fans of World of Warcraft struggle with, it is change. Even worse, when that change means that something is “taken away”. This is exactly the case with one of the most well-known symbols of World of Warcraft. Because with Dragonflight, the famous “Silver Dragon” will no longer exist – if it comes as it is in the beta.
What is happening? With the next expansion Dragonflight, there will be a major overhaul of the interface. The now rather old UI will be fundamentally renewed, modernized in many cases, and provided with numerous customization options. However, some old decorative elements will also have to give way, which would not fit into the new design.
And exactly such a decorative element is the Silver Dragon.
What is the Silver Dragon? In World of Warcraft, there are rare enemies, known as “Rare Spawns”. These often have a long respawn timer, so they are not always available. However, defeating such enemies almost always rewards a special prize. This can be the chance for a pet or a specific weapon, but toys are also possible.
In Dragonflight, the Silver Dragon has disappeared with the new interface. Instead, “Rare Spawns” now have a small icon under their health bar that marks them as special enemies. While this also serves its purpose, it is not as obvious and will likely require some time to get used to recognizing rare enemies at first glance.
Why does the community love the old symbol so much? The “Silver Dragon” is associated with nostalgia for many WoW veterans. Many players can still remember how they first discovered such an enemy and were excited to find out what it meant.
For over 18 years, many people have grown accustomed to this symbol and the expectations that come with a silver dragon. Accordingly, it seems difficult for some to let go of it now.
So, the reactions in the World of Warcraft subreddit are as follows:
- “The Silver Dragon should never disappear. It’s iconic. A big mistake.”
- “Hey, it’s Dragonflight. Let’s remove dragons from the game. Brilliant move.”
- “What the hell. I hate this. They should keep this in WoW, as it is an iconic element of the interface that contributes to the game feel. The dragon is even used in Hearthstone to show legendary cards. It’s a unifying interface element of the Warcraft franchise. What the hell are you doing, Blizzard?”
- “Maybe it’s called Dragonflight because the dragon has flown away.”
- “Whatever soul the interface had, we’ve probably lost it in the Shadowlands.”
In any case, this will likely be addressed in the first weeks after launch with an interface addon – but maybe Blizzard will be softened and won’t remove the Silver Dragon in favor of a small, inconspicuous icon.
