The Gamescom starts today and for World of Warcraft it looks bleak. Will WoW fans go home without new information?
Blizzard released a small preview video yesterday (21.08.2017) ahead of Gamescom, which briefly teases or even comprehensively presents the highlights of Gamescom. This included the reveal of Kel’thuzad as a new hero in Heroes of the Storm, but also the new map Junkertown for Overwatch.
However, it looked bleak for World of Warcraft. In the video, Ion Hazzikostas, the Game Director of WoW, stated that Gamescom will be “completely about Patch 7.3”.
Anyone at Gamescom in Cologne can also sit down at one of the computers at Blizzard and play the new dungeon “Seat of Triumph”. This is about the former power seat of the Eredar before they split into fel-corrupted Man’ari and the Draenei – basically the seat of government for Kil’jaeden, Archimonde, and Velen.
The problem is: The new dungeon has been available on the PTR of Patch 7.3 for some time. Those who are truly interested in playing the dungeon before its release have already done so on the public test server and will surely not travel to Gamescom for that.
Secret announcement or disappointment?
It could be possible that Gamescom just doesn’t fit well into the schedule of World of Warcraft this year, and the developers are just doing their best to at least create a solid community event. It might still be a bit disappointing if we had to make do without any new WoW announcements.
Currently, it seems like they are saving the reveal of the next chapter of World of Warcraft for BlizzCon in November.
There is still a tiny glimmer of hope that there will be a spontaneous reveal – because no one really expected anything with “Legion” last year. And in the preview video, Ion Hazzikostas was asked (not very seriously) what would happen at Gamescom:
“Do we have a chance to fight a titan? Can we finally defeat the Burning Legion? Or is there something with Jaina Proudmoore – perhaps a romance option?”
Hazzikostas responded that there will be “at least one of these three things”. And since we can – technically speaking – only defeat the titan as the final boss of the raid and thus also “finally destroy the Burning Legion”, only Jaina remains. But that’s already clutching at straws.
Cortyn says: After all the leaks and theories of the past months, Blizzard’s setup at Gamescom is a bit disappointing. However, I can also understand the restraint. If you hold a house fair a few months later, I wouldn’t want to shoot all my powder in advance either. But who knows – maybe the big surprise is still to come. However, the chances seem rather slim.
