PvP in World of Warcraft can be a draining thing. Especially in Retail WoW, it is often hard to find a way to get started.
Those showing mild interest in PvP in World of Warcraft have a tough time ahead. The entry can be quite exhausting and often leads to a spiral of frustration. Frustration that has been turned into a meme, which nonetheless holds more truth than joke for many.
For a large number of players who could potentially develop an interest in PvP, there is this cycle:
- One remembers that PvP used to be fun.
- One signs up for PvP and has to wait 30 minutes for an invitation.
- One has a terrible experience and gets completely rolled over.
- One learns absolutely nothing, no matter how hard one tries.
- Then the cycle begins anew.
But the image has sparked some discussions and apparently struck a chord in the community.
What is the problem with PvP in World of Warcraft? In the eyes of a large part of the community, the PvP in WoW has long been treated shabbily by Blizzard. The game has a fundamental focus on PvE, and all PvP changes are rather secondary or often come late. But that is not the only problem. Just obtaining the right gear can already lead to issues.
Particularly the way one obtains new equipment is criticized. Because those who do not farm right at the start of a season quickly fall behind and then have to go through the proverbial “meat grinder” to gather honor and valor just to get strong equipment.
The experience then is: One runs for 100 battlegrounds against way too strong enemies who flatten one in an instant, hoping for a chance.
This is how the community sees it: Accordingly, the comments in the WoW subreddit criticize the PvP system in its current form:
- “Yes, who could have foreseen that a system where new PvP players have to eat crap match after match would not lead them to continue playing PvP.” – MetalBawx
- “As a player who rarely plays PvP, all I know is that it’s a cycle of ‘You get held in the stun, helplessly surrounded, die, and get no feedback on what just happened. Repeat.’ This game is really bad at introducing new or interested players to PvP.” – Bloodmoon_Audios
However, it should also be noted that the upcoming expansion “Midnight” includes some positive changes in PvP. In addition to a new epic battleground and even a dedicated world PvP area, the practice mode against bots (“K.I.nderspiel”) will be a permanent addition to the MMORPG and is intended to serve as an entry opportunity.
However, it should not be forgotten that it is indeed possible to learn PvP in WoW. One just has to research a lot and really engage with it for a long time. Then one can even achieve a ranking of 2,400 as a role player without years of PvP experience.
