A bitter moment for a player of World of Warcraft. Just before the release of the new shop mount, he spent 9,999,999 gold.
Recently, one thing has caused a stir in World of Warcraft: The release of a new mount in the game’s shop, for a whopping 78 €. Not only is the price steep, but the features are also quite interesting, as the “Gold-Decorated Trader Brutosaurus” comes with a built-in auction house and mailbox.
The only alternative is an old mount that appears very rarely in the black market auction house, at an even higher price. Bitterly, a customer purchased exactly this alternative on the same day.
What happened? In the WoW subreddit, feminineambience posted a screenshot from the black market auction house of their realm. In it, the reins of the mighty Caravan Brutosaurus are visible – with a current bid of 9,999,999 gold. This means someone purchased the Brutosaurus just before Blizzard offered the significantly cheaper version in the shop.
As bids in the auction house cannot be retracted – whoever bids has already spent the money, unless someone outbids them. However, this is not possible at gold cap. There, you always win.
How big is the loss? When you convert the price of the two mounts in WoW gold and then the price of the WoW token, it’s quite hefty.
- The new “Gold-Decorated Trader Brutosaurus” was initially available for 1.8 million gold – that is 78 euros.
- The “Mighty Caravan Brutosaurus” costs 9,999,999 gold, which corresponds to a price of 442 euros.
The difference is thus 364 euros – or a little more than 8,200,000 gold.
The incident was likely not an isolated case, as all realms have their own black market auction house with random offers. It is likely that the “old AH mount” was offered on multiple realms and that several players purchased it just before the new dinosaur was revealed in the shop.
Is the gold really “lost”? That likely depends on the individual case. If it’s merely about the functionality of the auction house, then it can clearly be described as a significant loss, although it is also unclear how much gold the late buyer actually possesses. Perhaps they are one of the big “auction house masters” who have gold cap on multiple characters.
However, the Caravan Brutosaurus also has sentimental value for many collectors. After all, it is one of the most expensive and exclusive mounts in the game, which is only available through the black market auction house.
