The next patch for World of Warcraft is slowly approaching us. Patch 9.2 Eternity’s End will be the finale of the storyline of Shadowlands and probably the last update before the new expansion. To ensure that you know exactly what to expect, we have created this article, which contains all the details about the patch.

When will Patch 9.2 be released? An official release date for Patch 9.2 “Eternity’s End” has been announced by Blizzard. The update will be available to us on February 23, 2022. In America, the patch will be released one day earlier, on February 22.
New area: Zereth Mortis
The centerpiece of the patch is the new area Zereth Mortis. This is where the Jailer disappeared at the end of the raid “Sanctum of Domination”. Zereth Mortis is the place where “the First” essentially have their workshop. There, the various Shadowlands were created and tasked. This also means that in Zereth Mortis you will see many creatures in their mechanically appearing primal state before they were given more defined forms.
A special feature in Zereth Mortis is the progress system. Instead of filling a reputation bar, players must first learn the language of the inhabitants there. The Automa native to Zereth Mortis speak in a mechanical singsong. Therefore, players must first comprehend this rune-like language, the “Cipher of the First”, to interact properly with these creatures. This gradually unlocks new content, more quests, and more story.
The story of Patch 9.2 – What we know so far
In a nutshell, the forces of the Jailer from Korthia have moved on to Zereth Mortis. Zovaal’s goal is to conquer the forge there to kill the planet Azeroth and thereby initiate a process that reshapes the rules of the universe.
We will be hindered in this, among other things, by the Dreadlords, who have even learned a new trick – they disguise themselves as heroes and give instructions to NPCs that mislead them!
Meanwhile, players are of course trying to free Anduin, to utilize his knowledge about the Dominion runes and to redeem him from his current condition.
How this all unfolds will probably only be revealed with the PTR. The resolution of this story is likely to happen later, when the final cinematics are known. That will likely be several weeks after the patch’s release.
The Jailer’s goals have now been revealed, but are met with criticism. He apparently wants to destroy the World Soul of Azeroth in order to create a new reality.
It is also known how the machinery of death is to be healed. The Kyrian Pelagos will be installed as the new Arbiter and will ensure that all souls are sent to the correct realm of the Shadowlands.
Lastly, a quite significant cinematic featuring Sylvanas has already been released. Her soul fails to rejoin. The protector of Silvermoon cannot accept what she has become after death – until Uther offers her help.
New raid: Mausoleum of the First
The Mausoleum of the First will be the final raid of Shadowlands. A hefty 11 bosses await to be defeated by players. The raid opens in 2 stages, telling 2 different stories. The first 8 bosses will be released simultaneously, the last 3 will follow in the weeks after. This was done to also highlight the passage of time between the two raid parts.
The 11 bosses in the Mausoleum of the First are:
- Solitary Guardian
- Dausegne, the Fallen Oracle
- Artificier Xy’mox
- Prototype Pantheon
- Skolex, the Insatiable Ravener
- Halondrus the Reclaimer
- Lihuvim, Principle Architect
- Anduin Wrynn
- Lords of Dread
- Rygelon
- Zovaal
Thus, the final boss of the first section will be the fight against Anduin Wrynn. Interestingly, we will also encounter Xy’mox again. We last met him in Castle Nathria, where he sought to plunder the treasures of Denathrius. Something similar is probably in store for the Mausoleum.
The final boss is – not surprisingly – the fight against Zovaal, the Jailer. He seeks to destroy Azeroth.
New content – What’s in Patch 9.2?
In addition to Zereth Mortis and the Mausoleum of the First, there are a whole host of new content and the return of already known features. We want to briefly introduce them here.
Return of Tier Sets: With Patch 9.2, there is again a tier set for every class, including associated set bonuses. However, these sets cannot exclusively be earned in the raid this time. Players can also acquire these set items through PvP and “Mythic+”. This allows players to earn the coveted sets through other gameplay content as well.
Even though the tier sets are currently still being tested and constantly changed, the rough set bonuses are already known for all classes.
Two Legendary Items simultaneously: Also great will be the ability to wear two legendary items on your character at the same time. However, this is subject to certain restrictions, which we have explained here in more detail. In short, this means that you can only combine one covenant legendary with another legendary of your choice.
It is also important to know that Patch 9.2 brings a belt whose legendary power changes with each covenant switch. This allows you to bind the covenant legendary to a belt and freely switch covenants without losing the appropriate effect or having to manage much equipment.
Unlocking the 2nd legendary item will be relatively simple, as much grind has been removed during the PTR.
New Torghast mode only with bosses: Also new in Patch 9.2 Eternity’s End is a fresh Torghast mode, the “Jailer’s Gauntlet” – presumably translated as “Jailer’s Gauntlet”. Here, new cosmetic rewards are at stake and the chest of countless things is not active. Particularly cool: there are almost only bosses and very few trash groups. Here, it’s about the strongest combinations possible with Anima powers to defeat the bosses.
Flying must be unlocked again
As is customary in subsequently added endgame zones in World of Warcraft, the ability to fly must be manually unlocked again. In Zereth Mortis, you will initially be traveling only on foot and with your ground mount; the flying ability will come several days later.
However, the requirements for flying are relatively simple. At the earliest, you can unlock flying with the start of the 3rd week of the patch – that is, on day 15 – as only then can you complete the story up to the necessary point.
However, you can practically complete the other requirements on day 1 and only need a bit of travel time in Zereth Mortis. We have all the requirements for flying here.
More small items from Patch 9.2
In addition to all the highlights and improvements, there will of course also be a whole range of small items that will be improved with the new update. These are not necessarily particularly large changes that can be presented as a “selling point”, but they are still meaningful for some players. Here are some of the minor improvements that will come with Patch 9.2:
- Warlocks can finally summon an Incubus and give their Succubus a well-deserved vacation. Visually, the Incubus does not lag behind the Succubus in any way. However, selecting it does not occur via a glyph, but rather through new items. It is also interesting to note that the story of the Succubi and Incubi is likely such that the beings are gender fluid.
- Dungeon fans can look forward to a new affix. “Encrypted” adds new mobs to each dungeon that summon different minibosses, which then provide cool buffs for the players.
- The Shards of Dominion from Patch 9.1 will be disabled again and have no relevance in the new content.
- The grind in Patch 9.2 will be kept to a minimum – the required reputation requirements should be easily achievable.
- Buff food will soon be a matter for the entire raid. With the new “Stone Soup”, there will be no more excuses for buff food procrastinators.
Aside from that, there are numerous new pets, mounts, and toys. In the coming weeks, we will present the most interesting and strangest of these in more detail.
