Patch 8.2.5 of World of Warcraft continues the story of the dragon Wrathion. We reveal what he is up to.
Several days ago we reported that some characters in World of Warcraft have received a new model. This is usually a clear sign that the respective characters are gaining importance. Regarding Wrathion, the supposedly last black dragon, there is a new questline in Patch 8.2.5. We reveal what Wrathion is planning and what role he plays in the upcoming patch.
Spoiler warning: If you don’t want to know about Wrathion, his plans, and actions, you should not continue reading. You have been warned.
N’Zoth wants the black dragons: With Patch 8.2.5, N’Zoth is freed and his influence on the world is growing. Players notice this immediately in the Heart Chamber of Azeroth, as the Tauren spiritwalker Ebenhorn suffers. Ebenhorn is a black dragon who primarily walks through the world in his Tauren form. He complains that his mind is being attacked by N’Zoth and has increasingly stronger problems resisting the whispers of the Old God. After all, the black dragons were already under the control of the Old Gods back then – Deathwing being foremost.
The construct MOTHER wants to “cleanse” and destroy Ebenhorn immediately upon discovering the corruption, but Magni intervenes. He asks the players to find a salvation for Ebenhorn.
The players follow Wrathion’s trail: The champions of Azeroth hope for salvation from Wrathion, the self-proclaimed “Black Prince.” For a long time, he believed that he was the last black dragon and has gained a lot of knowledge over the years. As players, one follows his trail first to Pandaria, to the Tavern in the Mists, where his two bodyguards “Right” and “Left” can be found. They have clues for the player, but only reveal them after the watchful eyes of N’Zoth have been taken down. The Old God is also following the trail and trying to find Wrathion.
Records reveal Wrathion’s journey: Gradually, the player receives more and more diary entries from Wrathion. He describes his journey, how he collects knowledge from different cultures. For instance, he visited the Shado-Pan and the Lorewalkers to hear stories about the Sha (which are born from an Old God). He has also infiltrated the library of Shen’dralar (Dire Maul) to study their knowledge, as well as Karazhan.
In the end, the players find out that Wrathion has managed to create an “antidote” that can dampen the whispers of the Old Gods. While this is only a first step, it could save Ebenhorn. The very potion needed has been left behind by Wrathion so that we can take it with us. He knew we would seek him out to save Ebenhorn.

Is Wrathion a “Good”? From the records, it is clear that Wrathion wants to redeem his name. He does not want to become like his father and hopes to rectify his past mistakes. This refers to the fact that he helped Garrosh enter the alternative timeline of Draenor (Warlords of Draenor). Seemingly, he truly wants to help the players and Azeroth to win what he calls the “true fight for Azeroth”.
Does Wrathion have dark plans? Whether Wrathion is truly good cannot be said yet. After all, the black dragon has intrigued and pursued dubious plans in the past. Moreover, it is suspicious that a final diary page is burned next to the saving potion on the floor. This could of course have been the recipe for the potion. But why would Wrathion not share this knowledge? After all, it could also help other beings afflicted by the whispers.
Wrathion himself does not appear in this questline, but there are many hints about him. He is apparently being slowly built up as an important character who will play a significant role in an upcoming patch or expansion. This fits well with the alleged leak of the next expansion “Shadowlands” – there are supposed to be the Dragon Isles as a new area, with Wrathion in an important role.
What do you think of Wrathion? Is this a character you would like to see more of? Or should the young dragon curl back into its egg?
