World of Warcraft Dragonflight might soon come to an end. Because the next patch could also be the last one.
World of Warcraft Dragonflight delivers more content and faster than ever before in the history of WoW. But how long will this last until there are no new contents left? There are now first hints that Patch 10.2 Guardians of the Dream will be the final, major content update for Dragonflight.
This would mean that Dragonflight has “only” three raids and two major patches, in addition to the smaller patches.
What supports this? There are currently four main points that suggest Patch 10.2 could be the last major patch of Dragonflight. The first major indication is the story of Dragonflight. Although only Raszageth has been defeated so far and the other three incarnations are still alive, everything points to the fact that we only need to defeat Fyrakk. Because:
Vyranoth joined the aspects in Patch 10.1.7 and is now working with Alexstrasza. She is, at least currently, no longer an enemy.
Iridikron has disappeared into the Void through a portal. His words suggest that he is working on something bigger, which probably doesn’t happen within “a patch”.
This leaves Fyrakk as the last incarnation that needs to be temporarily stopped, which will happen in Patch 10.2 Guardians of the Dream. Afterwards, as of now, the incarnations are no longer an acute threat.
Furthermore, there has been no data mining so far that would indicate Patch 10.3. In contrast, some content from Patch 10.2, namely the Emerald Dream, has already been discovered in the beta of Dragonflight.
The third point is that Blizzard has not yet confirmed Patch 10.3 and is also avoiding this topic in interviews. They do not give clear answers as to whether there will be another major patch after Patch 10.2. This may, of course, be to keep the focus on Patch 10.2 – or to avoid the community discussing that Dragonflight is “already over” (In this case: Sorry, but I regret nothing!).
Lastly, the previously published “roadmap” of WoW supports this. Because this only goes up to Patch 10.2. Fairness must be taken into account, however, that the roadmap is supposed to go only until the end of 2023 and there will be new announcements “beyond the roadmap” as well.
This leaves Blizzard uncertain as to whether they mean a later date or more content that will be released in the announced patches.
Is Patch 10.2 the end then? This is also rather unlikely. Even if Patch 10.2 should be the last major patch, we should still expect some smaller patches, such as Patch 10.2.3, 10.2.5, or 10.2.7. Because Blizzard generally wants to stick to the quick release of new content and will most likely also host a “Season 4” again, during which all Dragonflight raids will gain relevance once more.
This season would then run similarly to the last season of Shadowlands – even there, all raids were again relevant at that time. This final season was fundamentally a bit faster and should refocus on all the different raids and stories of the expansion. This could also be in store for Dragonflight.
What does this mean for the future of WoW? If Patch 10.2 really is the last major patch, it could have implications for the timeline regarding when we can expect the next expansion. Because if Blizzard attempts to maintain the rhythm of 6-10 weeks between patches, the release of the next expansion could be as early as August or September 2024.
We will likely only get concrete information on this at BlizzCon 2023 in November, after which it will be an exciting time for all WoW fans. And until then, we can speculate a little together.
Until we know more, you can unlock flying on the Dragon Isles.
