A soulbound item in World of Warcraft can be quite frightening. An innocent yet serious question.
The vast majority of our readers have been involved with gaming for many years. They know the intricacies of games and grasp new mechanics relatively quickly – after all, most of it has been seen before. However, even today there are still people who take their first step into the world of MMORPGs like World of Warcraft. An innocent question arises that brings amusement in the WoW subreddit.
What was asked? Player Professional-Rip7111 wanted to know what soulbound items are all about. They asked:
I’m new to WoW and won an auction for a rifle today. It’s a much better weapon than the one I had and I was excited to finally use it. But then I got a pop-up that says, “Equipping this weapon will bind it to you.” Does that mean I can never unequip the weapon again? And if so, is there any way to remove it? I don’t want to equip the rifle to find out because I’m afraid I won’t be able to remove it. Sorry if this is a dumb question. (…)
While amusing for veterans, the question is quite logical. After all, WoW doesn’t explain very well what happens when an item becomes “soulbound.” The assumption that this item might now permanently stick to the character and can never be exchanged again is at least understandable – especially for a complete novice.
This is how the community reacts: The player base responds to such a question broadly with much understanding, after all, the thread creator admits to having no idea about MMORPGs. Therefore, most answers are explanatory and not mocking at all. There are a handful of negative comments, but they were collectively punished with “downvotes” and in some cases even deleted.
The vast majority explain clearly that soulbound items can indeed be unequipped. They simply cannot be passed on to other players afterward.
