The movie Warcraft: The Beginning was not the hoped-for success, which is why plans for the two sequels were buried. However, there is hope again.

What news is there about the film sequel? Industry insider Daniel Richtman explained on his Patreon page that according to his information, something is happening regarding the sequel to the movie Warcraft: The Beginning. Due to the success that the film had overseas, the film studio Legendary Pictures is reportedly now working on a sequel.
How reliable is this information? For now, it is still rumors. Legendary Pictures has not confirmed anything. However, the former Blizzard vice president and WoW story writer Chris Metzen retweeted this information. This immediately led his followers to ask him whether this was a confirmation for the sequel.
Metzen stated, however, that he is only passing on what he has read. He does not know anything about it himself.
A sequel might be possible, also from a revenue perspective
What speaks for a sequel? At the US box office, Warcraft: The Beginning was not a big success upon its release in May 2016. With a budget of 160 million dollars, it only grossed 46.6 million dollars in the USA. Thus, the film flopped in the USA.
Nevertheless, 430.1 million dollars could be earned worldwide, with 220.8 million coming solely from China.
Even if the movie’s success in the USA was lacking, the total earnings definitely justify a sequel. And it seems that Legendary Pictures wants to capitalize on this international success to produce Warcraft 2.
What can we expect? A trilogy was actually planned, as director Duncan Jones revealed. The second part was supposed to revolve around Thrall, the son of the orc Durotan from part 1, who grows up as a slave but wants to free his people and starts a revolt.
In part 3, there would have been another war between orcs and humans, which would have led to the founding of the new orc homeland Orgrimmar.
It is quite possible that Legendary Pictures will revisit these plans – provided the rumors about a Warcraft 2 are true. It is also possible that we could see a completely new story set in a completely different time in the history of the game. Here, especially the fall of Prince Arthas and his rise as Lich King comes to mind.
What to expect regarding Warcraft 2 is still unclear. We have to wait for an official announcement from Legendary Pictures.
