World of Warcraft is currently at an all-time high. Recent data suggests this – and a fairly accurate analysis.
The subscriber numbers for World of Warcraft have been a great mystery for years. No wonder, as Blizzard has not released concrete figures for a long time. Therefore, the community often has to settle for estimates and conclusions to determine the current state of WoW and its popularity.
The YouTuber and analyst Bellular has now gathered some sources and compiled various data. He concludes: World of Warcraft probably has more players than ever before in the history of MMORPGs with a high degree of certainty.
Currently, many are enjoying WoW Remix:
What information is confirmed? At GDC 2024, a graphic was shared, suggesting that WoW had approximately 7.25 million subscribers at that time. This was an estimate later confirmed by other sources to be “approximately correct” – that was at the beginning of 2024.
What new data is available now? In July 2025, there was a WoW trailer that was largely ignored – little wonder, as it mainly advertised an orchestra concert held in France. What’s interesting, however, is that the trailer stated that you should “join 9 million players.”
However, “players” in this case probably does not equal “subscribers” – it likely includes everyone who used a trial account in the (then) current month. This aligns with the previously estimated numbers of around 7.25 million subscribers once again.
Furthermore, WoW now has a significantly expedited patch cycle and more content for solo players – the Depths were a huge success and housing is just around the corner. WoW seems to have become extremely adept at keeping players entertained. Something that likely further increased the numbers.
China has drastically increased player numbers
Something that we almost overlook here in the West is the popularity of World of Warcraft in China. Because when the “7.25 million” was confirmed by several sources, WoW was not even available in China – as a dispute had split NetEase and Blizzard. The reconciliation came only later, along with millions of new players.
Although there are no official numbers from China, various analyses allow for conclusions about how successful WoW must be in China.
The operator of warcraftlogs had already speculated at that time that WoW must be “bigger than ever in the past.” Because at that time alone, there were log files for over 11 million different characters on the Chinese servers in Ulduar. Clearly – this also includes second and third characters and therefore cannot be broken down into player numbers.
How many players does WoW have in China? However, considering that in China alone, more than 2 million pre-registered within the first two days after the announcement of WoW, one can surmise that WoW probably reaches a quite high player count in China. This can also be compared with data from dataforazeroth. From those, it is revealed that in (modern) WoW, about 60% of players only play a single character at endgame. Most people do not raid with multiple characters at the same time – in any version of WoW.
WoW is so large and successful in China that Blizzard is creating a game mode just for the Chinese player base. Something that surely would not be done if a significant part of the entire community was not based there.
Why does WoW feel “emptier” and “smaller” for some? Some doubt that the numbers can be accurate because WoW feels “emptier” than before. However, Bellular has a logical explanation for this: WoW feels emptier because players are not only spread out over a larger world but also across different game versions. Some play Classic, some on the Anniversary Realms, others play Retail or Legion Remix. The player base as a whole may have grown, but it spans many game versions that do not or hardly interact with each other.
Another point Bellular makes is the sheer size of the gaming market. Even if WoW currently has more players than ever before, it would not feel so large and significant, because gaming is bigger and broader than ever before. As an example, he cites the platform Steam:
- When WoW had its then peak – at the time of Cataclysm – only 3 million players used Steam.
- Currently, more than 40 million players use Steam.
The gaming market has grown tremendously. Therefore, the attention around WoW feels smaller, even if the game has actually grown. In relation, WoW simply makes up a smaller part of the overall gaming scene.
Of course, this information has not been officially confirmed by Blizzard and will therefore likely vary slightly from reality. However, when looking at the available data, it makes sense and is quite substantiated. Otherwise, it is hardly explainable why Blizzard has enlarged the World of Warcraft development team in recent years – if they did not expect success from it, things would likely look different.
That player numbers are likely to rise even further seems almost certain. Because the beta for Midnight starts in a few days and shortly thereafter housing will be released.
