Chance determines the mightiest armor
With World of Warcraft: Legion, the best gear for players will no longer only come from the hardest raid instances. But what does that mean exactly? Are heavy raids then unnecessary? Is it enough to only run heroic dungeons for 5 players? Blizzard has answered these questions.
Basically, no one needs to worry about any major changes. Those who visit mythic raid instances will still receive better gear faster than someone who only completes dungeons and world quests. However, there is a new system that gives the chance to receive a massive upgrade in all activities.
In the forum, Blizzard explains it as follows: The global item level limit is 895, but this level cannot be reliably collected through “ordinary sources”. Instead, there are rewards with different item levels for many activities, such as 810 for world quests or 880 for mythic raids. When obtaining the item, there is, however, a certain chance to upgrade an item by 5 item levels. The game “rolls” internally to see if this bonus is granted. If successful, the roll is repeated, and the item level is raised again by 5 points upon success. This repeats until either the roll fails once or the item level maximum of 895 is reached.
But won’t all players just farm easy instances?
Blizzard does not see this as a risk. The reason is that the probability of an item being upgraded from level 850 to 895 is very low. It would need to pass the “luck roll” a total of 9 times, and this chance is extremely low. Of course, this can and will happen in isolated cases. However, for someone wanting to upgrade all of their gear through the “easiest” gaming option, they would need to invest an average of several decades into the game – that simply won’t happen.
The thought behind these changes is that all content should remain relevant in some way. If a friend asks you to join him in a heroic dungeon, even though you don’t need anything from there anymore? Then there is now at least a chance that you will get an upgrade. The chance is not high – but it is present.
