Blizzard has confirmed what many suspected: The player numbers of World of Warcraft have developed splendidly with Legion.
The Burning Legion invites heroes back to Azeroth
Blizzard has been at PAX West in the past few days and not only revealed some details about the upcoming Karazhan patch, but also about Legion and the state of the game itself. The developers seemed visibly satisfied, as the reviews of the expansions are consistently good, with few exceptions of downward trends.
There is certainly more significance to the comment that the current number of players in the game is higher than it has been for “several years”.
An important feature that fans have been asking for years was more class-specific quests. Since Cataclysm, class quests had been removed from the game – with few exceptions. Previously, it was thought better to develop quests “for all players” so that more players could enjoy more content. With Legion, this has been developed exactly in the opposite direction. This ensures that each class feels different from the quests and thus gives the classes more individuality – exactly what fans have wanted for years. This is now rewarded with higher player numbers.
Mein-MMO believes: These are certainly good news for World of Warcraft, but the developers are also experts in vague statements. There is no really reliable data, so “more players than for a few years” could essentially just mean the two years since Warlords of Draenor. Subjectively, however, Legion clearly attracts more players back to Azeroth than the last expansion did. The Burning Legion is simply a more appealing enemy than the highly technological orcs from the past of another timeline.
