With Legion, World of Warcraft gets a rather expensive mount. A whopping 2,000,000 Gold needs to change hands.
The most expensive mount in World of Warcraft
Just recently, we reported that the gold cap in World of Warcraft: Legion will be raised. Blizzard didn’t wait long and implemented a new vendor in the game who takes advantage of this gold cap. The NPC “The Mad Merchant” has several items for sale, and their prices are quite steep.
- 250,000 Gold: Prismatic Bauble – A toy that momentarily follows the player with a rainbow trail
- 500,000 Gold: Madman’s Luggage – A 34-slot bag
- 1,000,000 Gold: Celestial Calf, a shimmering hippopotamus (Battle-Pet)
- 2,000,000 Gold: Bloodfang Widow Mount – a large spider mount
Many players of the Alpha version of Legion have now complained about these prices in the forum. Especially the expensive mount is an eyesore for them. Many refer to this vendor simply as a “gold sink” in order for Blizzard to combat inflation and remove currency from the game.
In the official forum, they addressed this vendor and clarified: The “Mad Merchant” is not a gold sink, but merely an exclusive reward for a certain group of players.
“If we wanted to take as much gold as possible from the players, we would have set the prices differently. If the mount only cost 200,000 gold, then significantly more than ten times the number of players would buy this mount. The purpose of this mount is to be absurdly expensive, just as the Time-Lost Proto-Drake was absurdly rare.”
They also delve deeper into the criticism that the mount was only made for a small minority of players.
“Almost every facet of World of Warcraft consists of activities that are created for a minority of players. It may sound strange at first, but it is true. Part of what makes the magic of WoW is that it is not a straightforward game, but one that can be played in many different ways. A minority of players raid. A minority of players engage in PvP. A tiny minority raid mythic. A tiny minority participate in rated PvP. A minority has multiple characters at max level. A minority plays pet battles, role playing, sells things in the auction house, and so on. (…)”
And yet: this collection of minorities is in the truest sense of the word World of Warcraft.
The price of this mount is unlikely to change. It is meant to be exclusive for the players who have set the goal of accumulating as much gold as possible. Let the farming begin.
