With World of Warcraft: Legion, there are a number of quests that are fundamentally “different” from anything we have experienced so far in Azeroth.
A special questline is unlocked over the course of several weeks – namely through the level of artifact knowledge that you have acquired. Every few levels, there is a new quest from Xe’ra that allows the player to experience different memories of Illidan.

Once the artifact power has reached level 5 and all necessary prerequisite quests are completed, Xe’ra sends the players to Azshara (on Kalimdor). There they experience a memory of Illidan before the journey continues to the Black Temple in the Broken Isles.
Here we take on the role of Illidan and fight against a real raid of 25 players. We have most of the abilities that Illidan had back then – we can fire eye lasers, summon the flames of Azzinoth, and unleash the Inner Demons before being ultimately taken down by Maiev.
Interestingly, some “familiar” characters are present in the player’s raid. “Johnny Imba” can be seen in the background, who, by the way, is “afk” throughout the entire fight. An overly enthusiastic rogue keeps jumping through the camera in the cutscenes, and some other raid members repeatedly make comments like, “Who pulled too early?” or “Will I get a resurrection?”.
At the end of the quest, there is even a unique cutscene. If you don’t mind spoilers (but if you’ve read this far, you probably don’t), you can watch it here.
The fight against the raid can be repeated after completing the quest. Whether this is just a gimmick or if the fight still holds some secrets remains to be seen. Perhaps it is possible to “alter” this memory and defeat Maiev.
Cortyn says: One of the funniest quests in all of World of Warcraft. The developers have thought of many details and funny references. In Phase 1, for example, you have to “stare intensely” at Gul’dan’s skull. In the fight itself, you have an ability with a 15-minute cooldown – the enrage timer that Illidan had back in Burning Crusade. The enemy “heroes” even use raid markers, cast food as mages, and place cauldrons with potions that help against shadow and fire damage. Everything just works here. Details and humor without end.
