Some legendary items from World of Warcraft are being revised. The new Game Director reveals why this is being done.
A few days ago, Blizzard hosted another livestream where the developers answered questions from the community. As the newly appointed Game Director, Ion Hazzikostas took the opportunity to announce the release date for Patch 7.1 but also talked about many other topics.
One of these topics was legendary items that cause frustration for many players. Either because they haven’t received a Legendary yet, or because they have received one that is relatively useless for their specialization.
For example, tanks can receive an item that provides a shield when the character has not taken damage for a while. But when exactly do tanks not take damage for several seconds in a row? Similarly, there is an item for tanks that increases the damage dealt to enemies who still have more than 90% health. For both (and other) cases, they want to revise the legendary items. This will probably not happen with Patch 7.1, but hopefully “shortly thereafter.” Anyone currently dissatisfied with their legendary item will just have to wait a few weeks; then the effect could be better.
“There will always be a best and a worst item, that’s unavoidable. But we will ensure that the worst are not as bad as they currently are.”
Furthermore, legendary items are intended to provide an “expanded toolkit” for individual characters in the long run. For instance, if a warlock can spontaneously create their demon portal, it may open up strategies for a raid that would not otherwise be possible. While a specific item may only be good in certain situations, when that is the case, the corresponding player should feel “special and appreciated.”
