When gathering herbs in WoW: Legion there’s nothing to consider? Our guide convinces you otherwise.
Herbalism is arguably one of the simplest professions in World of Warcraft. You see a flower on the minimap, rush over, gather it … and done. Wrong! With Legion, there are many small details of herbalism that you should pay attention to if you want to maximize efficiency.
Aethril – the wonder plant with the great bonus
Aethril should be your top priority when you start gathering. Because Aethril (Rank 3) gives you a special property that also affects all other plants! Whenever you harvest an herb, there’s a small chance that another plant of the same type spawns right there. And before you ask: Yes, this new plant can trigger all effects – sometimes leading to chain reactions of 4 or 5 plants, which massively increases gathering efficiency!
However, you should bring a bit of time, because while “Aethril (Rank 1)” and “Aethril (Rank 2)” can often be obtained in just a few minutes, the quest starter for Rank 3 can take many hours before you find it at a flower. We needed exactly 43 rounds in Azsuna, which meant over 2000 herbs. The endurance is worth it though, as this bonus applies to all plants – yes, even to annoying Starstalkers.
Enchanting and Shredder – More speed, less downtime
If you’ve already gathered some herbs, you’ve likely noticed the many other players in goblin shredders. These mounts allow you to stay in the saddle while picking flowers. You can either buy such a shredder from engineers at the auction house or obtain it for an achievement, which requires you to collect 300 different toys – particularly with Legion it’s “relatively” easy to achieve. Then nothing stands in the way of your Mechanical Wood Extractor.
If that’s too expensive, you can also visit a blacksmith you trust and buy some Demonsteel Stirrups. This item allows you to interact with items (like plants) for 2 hours without dismounting.
Also, you should get the Legion enchantment for herbalism. This is applied to gloves and thus does not interfere with any “important” enchantments. The enchantment ensures that herbs are harvested significantly faster. It takes about 0.5 seconds, allowing you to often finish before enemies even realize you’re picking an herb. Especially in combination with the shredder, you can farm without ever having to dismount!
More tips and tricks
- With Dreamleaf, you can already tell in advance whether an angry plant will appear when harvesting, which leaves even more Dreamleaf. If the herb has a reddish color (see screenshot), a foe will definitely appear when harvesting!

- Dreamleaf is best farmed not from the actual plant, but in Shala’nir (Val’Sharah). Hunt “Mischievous Sprouts” here. These creatures can be “harvested” after death and always leave behind Dreamleaf and often Yseralline Seeds. Between 2 and 12 Dreamleaf drop from a single creature.
- Unlike all other herbs, each Aethril plant has exactly one possible spawn point. This is where helper addons like “Gatherer” really pay off.
- When gathering Foxflowers, you should have the in-game sound turned on at all costs! Occasionally, after harvesting, foxes spawn that leave a trail of herbs behind – you can recognize them by their distinctive howling. Just walk over the flowers on the ground, and you’ll be about 20 Foxflowers richer.
- For maximum effectiveness, you should get the shoulder enchantment Boon of the Harvest from the Dreamweavers (friendly). Then slain enemies occasionally leave behind bags with herbs.
