WoW ruins family honor. At least in a South Korean commercial.
In many cultures, games are still considered something negative, and every young person who spends their time on this hobby is “throwing away their youth.” However, in recent years, games have increasingly become part of mainstream society (at least in other countries), making the topic perfect for parodies and advertising.
The Secret Hobby of the Father
Particularly in Asia, values such as “sense of duty” and “family honor” are still held in high regard, which is why these terms can be played with particularly well. What could be better than a serious “heart-to-heart talk” between a successful family man and his son, who is approaching 30 and still stuck in his studies?
After all, it’s well-known that “Time is money” is plastered on the walls of our society everywhere. A father can’t let his son waste his entire youth on games! Or can he? Check out the following three-part commercial and remember to switch the subtitles to “English”.
The commercial also plays with the stereotype that games are still frowned upon by the older generation. A similar commercial was released back then for Hearthstone, featuring the same actors (and generally the same theme). Remember to check for English subtitles here as well.
Cortyn says: I find ads like this entertaining and much more effective than the typical German “We hold the product in front of your face for 30 seconds,” because humor indeed packs a better punch – at least for me. But South Korea is known for often adding a unique twist of humor to many things. Generally, I think it’s cool to break a little with “social expectations” to generate attention. Sure, in the end, it’s still advertising and purely financial interest – but at least it’s funny!
