Professions are important again in WoW: Legion. But which combination should you choose? Are gathering professions even worth it?
The Dilemma of Profession Choice
Year after year, WoW players ask the same questions. Which professions are useful in the upcoming expansion? What benefits do my professions still have in Legion?
In Legion, all professions are revamped, but the core, sensible combinations haven’t changed much. A blacksmith still needs ores from a miner, alchemists cannot do without the plants of an herbalist, and tailoring still pairs excellently with enchanting.
As a tip, we recommend reflecting on “classic combinations” – that is, a crafting profession in conjunction with the appropriate gathering profession. Since you (at least at the beginning of Legion) primarily play just one character to not fall behind in artifact power, it may become difficult to supply pure crafters with resources from alts. Because every minute spent not on the main character at the start means lost artifact power for the main. However, those who can afford to forgo a few decimals in character strength can safely stick with their already chosen professions. Traditionally, it takes a while for resources to be offered at affordable prices in the auction house.
The Blood of Sargeras – the Important Crafting Resource
All crafting professions will sooner or later have to deal with the Blood of Sargeras. This is a new, rare resource that can best be compared to Fel Corruption. Only with this material (and Obliterum) can crafted armor be upgraded up to item level 850. Blood of Sargeras can be found at level 110 almost everywhere – through world quests, dungeon visits, gathering professions, or even fishing.
Generally speaking: Yes, gathering professions have a slight advantage when it comes to acquiring “Blood of Sargeras” because it is an additional source from which the resource can be obtained. However, it is not strictly necessary, as Blood can also be solidly gathered through world quests or even a shoulder enchant that can be obtained from the “Sentinels”. However, we advise against having two gathering professions simultaneously – as the blood is soulbound, it does not (so far) have any use for pure gatherers.
By the way: Blizzard plans to further develop professions in the upcoming content patches. Even if a profession currently does not seem very lucrative, it might have new, exciting recipes in patch 7.1 or 7.2.
Mein-MMO thinks: Even though it’s the “casual answer,” players should stick with the professions that they enjoy. A big overhaul is not necessary, as the temporary benefits, such as crafted gear, can quickly be compensated for through dungeons or world quests.
