In World of Warcraft: Legion, much revolves around the artifact weapons. These are given to players early on and grow with their bearers over the duration of the entire expansion. Each talent specialization receives its own weapon, which is why priests have a total of 3 artifacts available. Let’s take a look at the individual weapons.
Discipline – Wrath of the Light (Artifact weapon for hybrid priests)
Background story: The Scarlet Crusade was so eager and fanatical in its efforts to banish the undead from Azeroth that it attempted to create a second Ashbringer. This time, however, it was to take the form of a staff that could also be wielded by priests and spellcasters. This did not sit well with the dreadlord pulling the strings of the Crusade: he thwarted the attempt and caused a magical explosion. The staff was too powerful and uncontrollable, leading several wielders to fail in their attempts to wield it. The elite magicians of the Kirin Tor then decided to seal the staff away to protect the world from further calamity.
Properties of Wrath of the Light: Discipline priests fulfill a hybrid role in Legion. The goal was to have them be solid damage dealers while passively casting their healing through this damage. For this reason, the artifact properties are also a colorful mix.
It starts with Light’s Wrath, which deals high damage to a single target. The more allies are affected by “Atonement” at the time, the higher the damage.
Barrier of the Devoted increases the healing received from Atonement by 100% for all allies within Power Word: Barrier.
The Power of the Dark Side gives Shadow Word: Pain a chance to increase the damage or healing of the next Atonement by 100%.
Finally, there is Sins of the Many: The priest’s damage is increased by 1% for each friendly character affected by Atonement.
Holy – T’uure, Beacon of the Naaru (Artifact weapon for healer priests)
Background story: When the Eredar joined the Burning Legion, a small part broke away to flee from Sargeras and his minions – this group would later be known as the Draenei. During their flight, the demon hordes attacked the Draenei and nearly overwhelmed them if the Naaru had not protected them with a crystal beacon. Years later, this beacon fell into the hands of the Legion on a conquered world. This legendary weapon has not been seen since…
Properties of T’uure, Beacon of the Naaru: Holy priests traditionally focus on healing their own allies. Therefore, most properties are designed to enhance existing spells with new effects, reduce cooldowns, and increase healing output.
Initially, there is Light of T’uure, an instant cast spell that heals the target for a large amount and then increases the priest’s healing on that target by 25% for 10 seconds.
Save the Fallen resets the cooldown of Spirit of Epiphany when a group member falls below 40% of their maximum health. This can only occur once every 30 seconds.
The Blessing of T’uure ensures that critical hits from healing and Flash Heal increase all of the priest’s healing for 12 seconds by 20%.
Finally, there is Renew the Faith: As long as Divine Hymn is active, Prayer of Mending jumps to a new target every 0.5 seconds, consuming no charges in the process.
Shadow – Xal’atath, Blade of the Black Empire (Artifact weapon for DPS priests)
Background story: Created from the claw of an Old God, Xal’atath is a powerful ritual blade that has been used repeatedly in disturbing sacrifice ceremonies since the time of the Black Empire (the reign of the Old Gods). Each of these rituals brought with it a terrible catastrophe. Worse still, the blade seems to have a will of its own and distorts its victims with Void energy, turning them into abominable beings. Few weapons could be closer to the madness of the Old Gods.
Properties of Xal’atath, Blade of the Black Empire: Shadow priests fully embrace the Void and madness in Legion. Their normal artifact talents are somewhat monotonous – they are almost all just direct damage increases. However, the peculiarities are more exciting.
First up is Void Torrent: This spell can only be used in Void form and channels Shadow damage to a target over 4 seconds. While channeling, Madness (the new priest resource) does not deplete.
Sphere of Insanity summons the eponymous Sphere of Insanity whenever the priest is in Void form. 5% of all damage dealt to targets affected by Shadow Word: Pain is doubled.
The Call of the Void ensures that every Mind Flay has a certain chance to summon a Void Tentacle, which torments the target with Mind Flay for 10 seconds.
Finally, Mass Hysteria improves the Void form. For every second in Void form, the damage dealt by Shadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch increases by 3%. This stacks as long as the Void form persists.
