World of Warcraft: Legion brings artifact weapons as a feature. It is one of the central features of the upcoming expansion of WoW: Legion. But what are artifact weapons exactly? What do they bring, how do we get them, and how do we improve them? We want to provide you with a little overview with this article.
Artifact Weapons in WoW Legion – War Machine with Legendary Glory
In order to contain the threat of the burning legion, the heroes of Azeroth need the most powerful weapons that have ever existed. That’s why each specialization receives its own questline to embark on the search for a notable weapon. Blizzard pulls out all the stops and digs deep into the lore of the Warcraft universe to offer something suitable to each specialization. While paladins get to wield the Ashbringer, druids receive the legendary Scythe of Elune, and mages get the blade of the blood elf prince Kael’thas, Felo’melorn.
The weapons will accompany players throughout the entire expansion, continuously gaining power – so there’s no need to rely on special instance drops; the artifact weapons will be the optimum for a long time.
Ultimately, however, no one is limited to a specialization. It is easily possible to subsequently acquire the weapons of other specializations.
The Properties and Talents of Artifact Weapons
Similar to the character itself, the artifact weapons possess “talents“, also called properties or “traits”, which are gradually unlocked over the course of the expansion. Unlike a normal leveling system, however, artifact power must be spent, which can be earned through various content in the game. No matter if quest, PvP, or visiting an instance, many activities in Legion reward with artifact power, which can then be invested in useful properties.
These include “small” improvements, such as increasing the damage of a specific ability or boosting the dodge chance, but also “large” properties. In particular, the powerful traits cost a lot of artifact power but grant powerful effects or even completely new abilities.
Also unlike a regular talent tree is the fact that sooner or later all properties of a weapon will be unlocked, so nothing has to be sacrificed in the long term.

Customization Options for Artifact Weapons – Skins and Transmogrification
However, to ensure that not all characters of a specialization jump around the broken islands looking exactly the same during the expansion, Blizzard has planned a larger system that allows you to customize the appearance of the artifacts. Each weapon has at least 5 different skins with additional effects and several color configurations. These options are unlocked through various gameplay progress: raids, PvP, or completing special questlines.
If you are not fond of your artifact weapon, you can simply use another transmogrification to cover its appearance. However, the weapons contain a lot of attention to detail and sometimes completely new animations, making it seem rather wasteful.
