We present to you the three artifact weapons that Death Knights can acquire in World of Warcraft: Legion.
In World of Warcraft: Legion, much revolves around the artifact weapons. These are given to players early on and grow with their bearers over the course of the entire expansion. Each talent specialization receives its own weapon, which is why Death Knights have a total of 3 artifacts available. We take a look at the individual weapons.
Blood – Maw of the Damned (Artifact weapon for Blood Death Knights)
Background story: The Maw of the Damned is a weapon that has been used by the Burning Legion for a long time. The metal is enchanted to drain life energy from its victims – a particularly insidious variant of pain. Within the weapon sleeps the soul of its long-ago creator, still plagued by hunger. For over a millennium, the axe was wielded by a Mo’arg, who crushed uprisings and paved the way for the Legion. All that time, this Mo’arg grew more and more powerful – it is time to wrest this artifact from him.
Properties of the Maw of the Damned: Since Blood is the tank specialization, the properties are also designed accordingly. Many abilities with high threat generate more damage, and the character’s health and parry chance are increased.
It starts with Consumption, a melee attack that hits all targets in front of the Death Knight and deals triple weapon damage. The Death Knight is healed for 200% of the damage dealt.
Umbilicus Eternus is an enhancement of two abilities combined. After Vampiric Blood expires, the Death Knight absorbs damage equal to five times the damage done with Blood Plague during the duration of Vampiric Blood.
Skeletal Shattering enhances Bone Shield in an interesting way. Each time the ability absorbs damage, there is a chance equal to your critical strike chance to absorb an additional 8%.
For a massive increase in survivability, there is Unending Thirst. As long as Blood Shield is active, the Death Knight gains 50% life steal, and Death Strike deals 50% more damage.
Frost – Frostmourne and Frostbrand (Artifact weapons for Frost Death Knights)
Background story: When the blade of Lich King Arthas, Frostmourne, was shattered high atop Icecrown Citadel, many of the trapped souls escaped to freedom. Yet not all souls succeeded. Countless spirits remain trapped in the shards of the former rune blade that were not freed by the Ashbringer. Some of these shards were gathered and are now being forged into two new swords: Frostmourne and Frostbrand. But before the swords can be wielded, the trapped souls must first be subjugated by the bearer.
Properties of Frostmourne and Frostbrand: The properties of the blades are classic and almost exclusively increase the damage of Frost abilities. An enhancement of Anti-Magic Shell ensures that the ability also removes all magical influences from the Death Knight upon activation.
Frost Death Knights begin with Crystalline Swords. This ability gives all melee attacks a chance to summon copies of both blades, which then stab into the target for a short time.
Frost Fever is enhanced by Hypothermia. Each time Frost Fever deals damage, the subsequent damage from the fever is increased by 10%.
Sindragosa’s Fury recalls Arthas from Heroes of the Storm. Every 5 minutes, the Death Knight can summon the frost wyrm Sindragosa, dealing damage to all targets in front of the Death Knight (40-meter range) and reducing their movement speed by 50% for 10 seconds.
The spell Merciless Winter is enhanced by Frozen Soul. Once winter ends, the blades unleash an explosion for 5000 frost damage. The damage is increased by 100% for each additional enemy hit by Merciless Winter.
Unholy – Apocalypse (Artifact weapon for Unholy Death Knights)
Background story: The powerful blade Apocalypse was once created by the Nathrezim, the vampiric demons commonly considered the architects of lies and intrigue. The sword is filled with violence, plague, and death, earning its name when a mage from Tirisgarde could not control its power and wrought untold destruction. After that, the sword was picked up by the dark riders who brought it to their master Medivh in Karazhan. There it rests in the catacombs, even long after Medivh’s death – until now.
Properties of Apocalypse: The properties of Apocalypse primarily increase the damage of the Death Knight’s various dots. However, an interesting aspect is the ability to cause the ghouls of the Army of the Dead to explode upon their (re)death.
At the beginning, there is – who would have thought – the ability Apocalypse. This inflicts moderate damage to an enemy and consumes all Festering Wounds on the target. For each wound consumed, the Death Knight creates a ghoul from his Army of the Dead, who fights for 15 seconds.
Double Doom enhances the passive ability Imminent Damnation. This ability can now accumulate 2 charges, and its effect is triggered 15% more frequently.
The Shambler gives all of the Death Knight’s attacks a chance to create a “Super Zombie” that shambles towards the target and explodes there, dealing damage to all nearby enemies.
Scourge of the Worlds enhances two abilities combined again. Death Coil now has a chance to increase the damage of the next Scourge Strike against the target by 50%.
