Legendary heroes need legendary weapons
With the introduction of so-called “artifact” weapons, Blizzard addresses two problems in the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion “Legion.” On one hand, it ensures that every player will receive an exciting weapon, as the legendary ring was powerful but offered no prestige value since it did not improve appearance. At the same time, it introduces new questlines with the weapons that players have long demanded: class quests. But let’s start at the beginning.
What are artifact weapons?
One of the first quests in Legion is to acquire your own artifact weapon. The type of mission you receive depends on your talent specialization. Retribution Paladins receive the legendary blade Ashbringer and Frost Death Knights claim fragments of Frostgram to forge new blades. In total, there are 36 different weapons and thus also 36 different questlines! As you level up in Legion, your weapon will automatically gain strength and change its appearance until it reaches its final form. At the same time, you will collect artifact power, which can be invested in the weapon’s talent tree. This will awaken new powers of your weapon, which can also affect abilities. For example, a Death Knight can resurrect themselves after death with the corresponding weapon talent, and the Ashbringer mimics some abilities of the Paladin.
Customization for each class
To prevent all Retribution Paladins from running around with the same Ashbringer, Blizzard allows us to use different weapon skins. For the Paladin weapon, there are about 5 different variants that need to be unlocked through various content. One appearance type is reserved for PvP, while others can be obtained through raids or additional game content (such as completing all quests or achieving certain achievements).
Druids, who are normally in shapeshift form, can also be pleased, as their weapon affects the various forms! Just like the other weapons, multiple models and modifications can also be chosen here.

No more weapons as quest rewards?
With the introduction of artifacts, other weapon rewards seem to become obsolete. Whether there simply won’t be any other weapons in the expansion remains to be seen. It is possible, of course, that a quest that would otherwise provide a weapon now grants a large amount of artifact power, leading to an increase in strength.
