The discussions in the forums surrounding WoW Classic are tense. Blizzard is considering drastic measures.
Since the announcement of WoW Classic, that is, special servers where World of Warcraft runs only in its original version until shortly before “The Burning Crusade”, there has been much discussion. The fans’ opinions on what such a Classic server should look like are widely divergent.
A large part of the players believes that nothing should be changed about Classic – that is, no adjustments to the classes and all the errors and bugs from back then would simply be part of the game.
However, these players were not good at articulating their opinions objectively. Numerous insults and hostilities can be found in the relevant forum posts.
Classic fans are cutting themselves
In the end, Community Manager Ornyx had enough. As the discussions continued to escalate and the comments became more personal insults and less about objective debate, Ornyx pulled the emergency brake. The thread was closed and an indirect warning was issued:
“We are seeing a significant increase in necessary forum moderation and sanctions for insults and toxicity from players participating in the forum without an active subscription. (…) If it is the best decision for our community, I am not averse to flipping the switch back and making this forum available only for subscribers.”
Ornyx emphasizes that he knows that many Classic fans may not be playing “Legion” at the moment, but since a large part of the inappropriate posts came from “non-subscribers”, he felt forced to take this step – the burden of forum moderation and account penalties became too great.
Classic is definitely a passionate topic that is being debated heatedly. But here, many players probably did not see the boundaries and have now cut themselves. Because if they do not behave and are excluded from the discussion, “Classic” could indeed become what they did not want.
