One of the most interesting items in World of Warcraft is the Ink-black Potion. Because with it, Azeroth looks really dark and completely different.
In World of Warcraft, there are thousands of items. Even for the greatest veteran, it is nearly impossible to know them all. It is even harder for players who were not there from the beginning. One of the most interesting items we want to introduce to you here. Welcome to the Item Spotlight: Ink-black Potion.
The Item Spotlight is a new, regularly recurring format on MeinMMO. Every few weeks, we want to focus on a special item from one of our managed games and answer the most important questions. Where does the item come from? What use does it have? What is its story? We hope to highlight a few cool items that you may have overlooked.
What is the “Ink-black Potion”? The potion is one of the few items in World of Warcraft that has an extremely long effect of 2 hours and drastically influences the appearance of the entire game world. The current sky, also known as the “skybox,” is replaced by a dark night sky with stars (but no moon). This plunges the entire World of Warcraft into darkness and creates gloomy conditions.
Along with the skybox, there is not only a dark sky with stars. Darkness also enters the rest of the world. All lighting that normally comes from the sky and the skybox is deactivated. This means that all light sources only come from other objects that inherently glow. In cities, these may be street lamps or fires, while in houses, light emanates from the inside to the outside.
As a player, you can also influence this, as there are a whole range of old lantern items that you can use as transmog. This makes your character shine coolly in the darkness and can be a very atmospheric detail, especially helpful in roleplay when playing at night.
What are the coolest environments for the potion? There are basically too many to list them all. Cities like Stormwind look really great under the influence of the potion, but places like the Darkmoon Faire, Suramar, or the Swamp of Sorrows also reveal a whole new effect.
It is only under the influence of this potion that you notice how much the lighting conditions in World of Warcraft can change. The game looks completely different and radiates a totally different atmosphere. Questing with this potion in Duskwood, in the Jungle of Stranglethorn, or in any other cool zone feels fresh and a bit eerie.
Special attention was given to the potion, however, in the new area Bastion. Many players find the area simply too bright. Especially when playing at night in dark surroundings, the bright and sometimes glaring backdrop of Bastion can cause gamers to vaporize before the screen like vampires in sunlight. An Ink-black Potion remedies this and tones down Bastion to a level that is more reminiscent of Ardenweald or Revendreth. A blessing for sensitive gamer eyes.
Are there any restrictions? Yes, even if only indirectly. Since the potion mainly changes the skybox and associated lighting, the potion has practically no effect in enclosed spaces such as castles or caves. There, the effect is only minimal – but fortunately, a large part of WoW takes place in the open world anyway.
How do you get the Ink-black Potion? The Ink-black Potion is not difficult to obtain, although you can only purchase it once a week per month. You can buy it at the Darkmoon Faire from Rona Greenteeth for 3 gold 33 silver 33 copper. The potion is stackable up to 20 times and there is no limit to how many you can own.
You can find Rona at coordinates 37 / 59 – that is a bit off the fairground in the woods.
The Darkmoon Faire is active from the first Sunday of a month until the following Saturday. So make sure to stock up on enough potions during this time and maybe fill up the guild bank with them. Since each potion lasts a full 2 hours, you shouldn’t use them up too quickly.
