A profession will probably be dropped in World of Warcraft Shadowlands. At least Blizzard does not want to bring any new content for it.
In the upcoming WoW expansion, most professions will be important, as they can contribute to the creation of legendary equipment. However, a secondary profession may fall by the wayside. It seems like there will be no new content for archaeology.
What was said? In an interview with the French site Judgehype, Patrick Dawson from Blizzard briefly talked about archaeology. He mentioned that this profession primarily deals with the peoples living on Azeroth. Consequently, there will be no expansion of archaeology in the Shadowlands.
So those who hoped to unearth relics of the Kyrian or Venthyr will be left disappointed.
Has this happened before? In a similar form, yes. At the end of the “Legion” expansion, Blizzard already bid farewell to First Aid and largely divided the recipes among tailors and alchemists. However, such an end for archaeology is rather unlikely. It is likely that simply no new content will be produced for it anymore – at least not in Shadowlands.
Cortyn says: Honestly, I find it a bit sad how archaeology has changed over the years. In Legion it was really cool – the profession had a purpose. You could complete a cool quest every two weeks and got a really nice reward. In Battle for Azeroth it was already significantly less, everything seemed much less caring and just a bothersome duty to continue the profession. I find it unfortunate that archaeology is now “on ice” – but it’s probably better than getting a second Battle for Azeroth in this profession.
For me, archaeology was always something simple that you could do nicely “on the side” to relax – similar to fishing. I find it a bit disappointing that this will be gone in Shadowlands.
But what is your opinion on this? Did you even use archaeology? Or will you not miss the profession?
