The final boss N’Zoth from World of Warcraft doesn’t seem to be dead at all. At least, that’s what an interview with Blizzard’s story writer suggests …
The end of the current final boss of World of Warcraft, N’Zoth, was not well received by many players. Especially the final cinematic has drawn harsh criticism. Numerous players are disappointed by the quick demise of the Old God, who has been built up since “Cataclysm” and then “burned out” within a single patch. But there is hope. For an interview reveals that the Old God N’Zoth may not be as defeated as we think …
Who is speaking? Steve Danuser is the “Lead Narrative Designer” for World of Warcraft, primarily responsible for developing the story. In an interview on Windows Central, he discussed many aspects of the storyline of Battle for Azeroth and also talked about N’Zoth.

What was said? Danuser was asked whether N’Zoth could return in the future. After all, there are some whispers suggesting this. Danuser responded in somewhat more detail:
The tentacles of N’Zoth have been entwined around Azeroth since he was imprisoned. This ranges from Yogg-Saron’s puzzle box through the deeds of Deathwing and the Shadowhammer cult, to the whispers of Il’gynoth in the Emerald Nightmare and his release in the fight against Azshara. Our “Visions of N’Zoth” update shows a world on the brink of a transformation into an idealized future of the Black Empire. The realization of every dream.
While the Light can see only one true path, the Void sees countless possibilities. Strategically, the Old Gods have always had “plans within plans,” waiting for a door to close so another can open. To believe that there can only be one outcome to the fight against N’Zoth would mean ignoring what he wanted to teach us.
“All eyes will open.” Do not let yours close.
Steve Danuser, Lead Narrative Designer of World of Warcraft
What does this mean? Of course, this is not a definitive confirmation of N’Zoth’s return. However, Danuser makes it sound as if N’Zoth’s story may not be fully told yet. He could therefore appear again later – probably not until one or two expansions.
This would also fit well with some unresolved mysteries currently in the game. Alleria, for instance, has been hearing the whispers of the Void even more strongly since N’Zoth’s death. Additionally, the dagger Xal’atath seems to have disappeared after Furorion used it to break N’Zoth’s armor. The fact that the dagger apparently “sucked something out of N’Zoth,” as seen in the cinematic, could be another hint that the essence of the Old God has not vanished.
Would you be happy to see N’Zoth again? Or should the Old Gods finally stay dead?
