Profane is a new sandbox MMORPG developed by a Brazilian indie studio. The developers talked about the topic of toxic community in a video and also addressed the comparison between games in general. They are particularly annoyed that many players immediately think of WoW when hearing MMORPG, even though WoW is not considered a true role-playing game in their eyes.
What does the CEO of Insane say? In the video, which is actually supposed to be about toxicity in MMORPGs, the developers of Profane talked about what makes the sandbox aspect particularly interesting.
The CEO of the studio, Diego Beltran, explains:
Most players have not had our experiences. They do not understand how great an open world can be. And sandbox players fail to make this understandable to other players. The special thing about role-playing games is that you take on a role and make tough decisions with it.
Beltran sees a problem mainly in the fact that many theme park MMORPGs are not true role-playing games. Since there are basically no choices to make, there is also no real role-playing aspect.
This particularly bothers him about WoW, the MMORPG that all other games in the genre are constantly compared to:
If you talk to young players today, they say: Oh, you are an MMORPG? Like World of Warcraft? NO, we are not. WoW is not an RPG at all…
What constitutes a real role-playing game for him? For Beltran, a role-playing game must involve making decisions and facing consequences. If you do not have to make a choice, you do not develop your character.
As an example, he mentions Minecraft. While you can play in Creative mode in a peaceful world, a true RPG only emerges in Hardcore mode, when you only have one life and want to fight the Elder Dragon. Then, a mistake can be the difference between life and death, which is why you immerse yourself much more in the character.
That is why he appreciates sandbox and hardcore games so much.
Hardcore games rely on theme park players
Should hardcore players stick together? However, Beltran sees a big mistake in the community of hardcore MMORPGs. They tell every player who does not feel comfortable right away: It’s not your game, move on.
However, according to the CEO, hardcore games are precisely reliant on these players. Instead of rejecting them, we should try to integrate them into the community, but also make it clear to them that they will not be guided by the game, but must seek their own adventure.
You can watch the complete statement in this video:
Profane will be a new hardcore MMORPG with many freedoms
What MMORPG is Insane developing? Profane is an MMORPG that aims to put the maximum freedom of its players in the spotlight. You can be whatever you want. The MMO does away with classes and even levels.
- You play in an open world with PvP and full loot
- There is an action combat system
- Instead of classes, there are skills that you can improve through frequent use
- You can create everything from your own house to a own city
- There will be different factions to fight for the control of various areas
- There is a crafting system along with a player-driven economy
- Weather will also impact gameplay
What happens upon death? Any player who belongs to a different faction than Profane can attack and kill you. Should you die, they can also loot your entire inventory.
However, players who are already skilled in crafting are expected to quickly regain equally good equipment. Progress such as experience in skills or crafting does not get lost.
What do you think about the statement from the CEO of Profane? And do you find the sandbox genre and a full loot system appealing? Feel free to share it with us in the comments.
