WoW introduces a new game mode, drops the ‘MMO’ in MMORPG

A new game mode for World of Warcraft has been announced. The catch: Other players are largely taboo.

In World of Warcraft Classic, the new game mode “Hardcore” has just started. Players only have one life – and must start a new character afterwards. Within less than 3 days, the first player had successfully reached level 60.

But Blizzard has already revealed that more is to come. A special mode that makes it even harder.

What has been revealed? In an interview with Forbes magazine, Tim Jones, Assistant Lead Game Designer of WoW Classic, talked about a new mode that will be coming:

The “Solo Self-Found” mode that players have often imposed on themselves on other realms. We did not have such a Self-Found mode at launch, where players are dependent on themselves and cannot use the mailbox or auction house.

We plan to implement such a mode, allowing players to impose these restrictions on themselves. This will also come with a way to display to others that they have taken on this challenge. It’s coming.

What does this mean concretely? Although there are no exact details yet, it seems Blizzard is strongly orienting itself on the rules that many players had already imposed on themselves in WoW Classic. This means:

• You may only equip gear that you have found yourself – therefore dropped, crafted, or obtained through a quest
• Trading with other players is prohibited – whether in the auction house or as regular trading
• The mail system cannot be used

It is also likely that a “You may not join groups” rule applies, as otherwise, a group could simply farm items very efficiently and thus circumvent the other rules.

Or in other words: The MMORPG WoW is getting a game mode where you cannot use pretty much any MMO elements.

When this additional difficulty level will come is still unclear – and also whether it will be about “fresh servers” or just an additional option that can be activated during character creation on the existing Hardcore realms.
