With Patch 9.1, you can finally fly in WoW! However, not in the place you probably would have preferred to do so.
At BlizzCon 2021, the BlizzConline, a lot of content was presented for the upcoming Patch 9.1 Chains of Domination for World of Warcraft. Flying was also a topic, and Blizzard confirmed that they will stick to the old plans. Flying will be unlocked in Patch 9.1, and it will be simpler than it was in previous expansions. We’ll reveal what that means – and what cool mounts you will get.
How will flying be unlocked? The unlocking of flying will not occur through a reputation grind or similar, but through the renown system of the covenant. As you increase your reputation and play the new chapters of the campaign that lead you to the new area of Korthia, you will unlock the flying ability all on your own.
It is to be expected that there will again be an unlocking over the course of several weeks, just as has been the case in the current campaign. So it is expected to take a few weeks after the release of Patch 9.1 until flying is finally available.
Can you fly everywhere? No. The flying ability in the Shadowlands is limited to the four realms of the covenants. You can fly in Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, and Revendreth.
However, you cannot fly in the Maw and therefore not in the new subzone Korthia. The entire gameplay of the Maw is not designed for players to fly here.
However, there is still good news. During the campaign, you will be able to unlock the ability to use your usual mounts in the Maw. Currently, only two mounts that are quite difficult to obtain can do this. Soon you will be able to use all mounts again.
When can you fly? That is still unclear. Currently, there is no release date for Patch 9.1 Chains of Domination. Currently, the mini-patch 9.0.5 is being tested on the PTR. Until that is completed, the next update cannot be implemented.
Since Patch 9.0.5 is supposed to be released in March, you should plan for another four to six weeks after that before a release can be cautiously aimed for – that would then be sometime between the end of April and the end of May.
What does flying bring? Essentially, flying will drastically speed up many daily tasks. You can quickly cover the various world quests and rare enemies.
Especially for secondary characters, this could also be lucrative, as they can already fly during the leveling phase. Since the unlocking will be account-wide, you can start flying on smaller characters as soon as you enter the Shadowlands, thereby speeding up the leveling phase significantly.
Lastly, flying is a blessing for everyone who loves to farm herbs and ores. With a flying mount, the next ore or flower is only a few seconds away, and annoying enemies can simply be flown over.
Are you already looking forward to finally being able to fly in the Shadowlands? Or was that unnecessary?
