Today, on November 11, 2020, the pre-event for the upcoming expansion Shadowlands in World of Warcraft has started. It offers some content and rewards – including a rare mount that you can only obtain once daily.
What kind of mount is this? The blue proto-drake has been in the game since Wrath of the Lich King – that is, for more than twelve years. To this day, it remains one of the most popular mounts in the game.
The reason for this is likely that it is quite difficult to obtain. Or rather: It is damn rare. Because actually, you just need to complete the dungeon Utgarde Keep and defeat the third boss “Skadi the Ruthless” there.
The chance of the dragon is so low that many players try in vain for months or even years to obtain it. This is partly because each character can only attempt it once daily, after which an ID is assigned to the dungeon.
With the current pre-event for the new expansion Shadowlands, there is another chance for everyone who still wants the dragon.
Pre-event grants double chance for dragon mount
So you have another chance: Right now, you can participate in the pre-event in Icecrown. In regular intervals, rare enemies will spawn, which you will see on the map as purple skulls.
These “rare mobs” are bosses from different dungeons in WotLK – including Utgarde Keep. Skadi is one of these rare foes and has the same loot as he does in the dungeon, just at a higher level.
Among them is also the blue proto-drake. So if you see Skadi, you can kill him and thus have a second chance at the rare mount.
Here’s the catch: The respawn timer of the enemies is about 6 hours and 40 minutes. So you might have to wait quite a while before you can kill Skadi with some bad luck. Additionally, many players are waiting for the bosses, and they will likely be dead within seconds.
Players are not yet sure whether the bosses can be looted multiple times a day. So with some bad luck, even with the event, you only have a second chance at the mount, but not multiple chances a day. As a rule of thumb: If the skull is on the minimap, you will probably get loot.
Either way, you would have to wait around seven hours for each attempt. So you need a lot of patience. This also leads to boredom, and many players now refer to the pre-event as the “AFK Simulator”.

In addition to the event and the bosses in Icecrown, the event also takes place in the Eastern Plaguelands.
