Upgrading legendary items in Patch 9.1 of World of Warcraft is somewhat cumbersome. We explain how you can upgrade the most important items.
Patch 9.1 Chains of Domination is on the way, and soon players will be able to experience many new contents in WoW. However, to get the most out of your character, the legendary items must be upgraded. The current maximum rank of 4 will be raised to 6. We reveal how you can upgrade your Legendaries in Patch 9.1.
Torghast is the key to upgrading Legendaries in WoW
What do you need to upgrade? The upgrading of legendary items works fundamentally as you already know. You return to the runesmith with your Legendary, select the item, and supplement it with a higher-ranked base item of level 5 or 6.
However, this time you will not need Soul Ash, but the new currency “Soul Cinders”. You can earn this new currency in Torghast, but only in the new levels 9 – 12. So you will have to visit Torghast for a few weeks to upgrade your Legendaries to rank 5 (item level 249) and rank 6 (item level 262).
The new total costs for legendary items of all ranks can be found in the following table. Please note that the respective rank always includes the total costs. When you upgrade your Legendary, you can deduct the previously paid costs (as usual). So you generally do not need new Soul Ash when upgrading from rank 4 to rank 5 or rank 6:

How to craft the new base items? Crafting the new base items at ranks 5 and 6 is a bit more complicated. Because crafters do not get new recipes for these ranks, they need to take a detour.
You have to create the old recipes for ranks 3 and 4 while using an additional component called “Vestige of Origins”.
If you use this item during crafting, the rank of the crafted base item will be increased by +2. This means:
- a base item of level 3 becomes level 5
- a base item of level 4 becomes level 6
In Korthia, crafters can earn the recipe for “Vestige of Origins”. It costs only 2,000 Stygia but requires a friendly reputation with the new faction. Therefore, it may take a few days for you to reach the necessary reputation level.
What do you need for a Vestige of Origins? That depends on the respective crafting profession. Generally, however, the materials are relatively affordable. The costs for the individual crafting professions are:
- Blacksmithing: 40x Laestrite Ore, 15x Shadowsteel Bar, 40x Korthite Crystals
- Jewelcrafting: 2x Essence of Rebirth, 2x Essence of Torment, 2x Essence of Domination, 2x Essence of Valor, 40x Korthite Crystals
- Leatherworking: 2x Heavy Desolate Leather, 15x Hornbeam, 70x Blanched Bone, 40x Korthite Crystals
- Tailoring: 400x Luminous Silk, 400x Shroudweave, 75x Shadowthread, 40x Korthite Crystals
Where can you get Korthite Crystals? The necessary Korthite Crystals can be obtained from various activities in the new area Korthia. You can loot them from treasures, obtain them from rare mobs, or receive them for completing certain quests.
Do you have to craft the items yourself? No. As usual, you can also buy the base items for rank 5 and rank 6 from the auction house or have a friendly crafter make them. However, since this crafter must also have Korthite Crystals, the costs for Legendary items at levels 5 and 6 might be a bit higher.
When can you upgrade the Legendaries? This is not quite clear yet and also depends on how quickly the new difficulties of Torghast open. However, do not expect to be able to upgrade in the first or second week. Week 3 or Week 4 seems much more realistic if you diligently visit Torghast and engage in the various activities in Korthia.
