Original message: In a new “Developer Q&A”, the Game Director of World of Warcraft, Ion Hazzikostas, spoke about a small but nice change that will go live soon. Players of the Horde and Alliance will soon be able to speak to each other! This will likely be enabled through a new potion that allows players to understand the language of the opposing faction.
What was announced? The developers want to introduce a new potion that is especially designed to help role-players. Drinking this potion will allow players to understand the languages of the opposing faction for a while – but not to speak. Therefore, both players will need to drink the potion to understand each other. This ensures that no one is “forced” to listen to the opposing faction. It is mainly intended to prevent insults, especially in PvP.
What triggered it? The reason for the introduction of this potion was a change that Patch 8.1 had implemented. Because of the patch, a specific addon that was primarily used by role-players no longer functioned. This addon allowed receiving messages from the opposing faction via Battle.net chat and translating them in-game appropriately. Thus, role-players from Horde and Alliance could communicate and engage in role-play together. This was no longer possible after the patch.
When will the potion be available? There is not yet an exact date for the potion. However, Hazzikostas mentioned that it will likely be patched into the game “sometime this weekend”. It is still unclear where exactly it will be available, but Hazzikostas assumes it will be sold in the sewers of Dalaran.
