Collecting Azerite will be an important part of WoW: Battle for Azeroth. But how does the catch-up mechanic work there?
In the upcoming expansion Battle for Azeroth, the artifact weapons will be replaced in World of Warcraft. Instead of walking around with the Ashbringer, Xal’atath, or Aluneth, players will once again have regular weapons at their disposal.
There is, in a sense, a replacement for the artifact weapon: the Heart of Azeroth. This necklace is given to every player and over time it unleashes new abilities in the character’s equipment.
The Heart of Azeroth requires increasingly larger amounts of Azerite to reach the next level. With higher levels, the Heart of Azeroth can unlock additional abilities in chest, shoulder, and head armor.
Azerite acts as “artifact power” – the more Azerite is contained in the Heart of Azeroth, the higher its level.
This immediately raised questions in the community about a “catch-up” system.
Will there also be a kind of “artifact knowledge,” meaning “Azerite knowledge,” that increases the amount of Azerite gained?
“No,” say the developers. They are dissatisfied with the artifact power system. It just doesn’t feel right to give a weapon 1.3 billion artifact power with a single click.
Therefore, in Battle for Azeroth, they are taking the opposite approach. Instead of increasing the amount of Azerite received over time, the required amount of Azerite decreases over the weeks and months.
If at the beginning of the expansion 2000 Azerite might have been needed to bring the Heart of Azerite to level 10, after a few months, it could be only 200 Azerite. These numbers are just examples.
This allows the developers to avoid gigantic numbers, as is currently the case with artifact power.
